Jared Hockema, Cameron County Democratic Chair

According to Texas Democratic Chair Gilbert Hinojosa, the state was not "in play" during the 2024 election as some anticipated.

Instead, Hinojosa's party suffered "devastating defeats up and down the ballot" with 55% of Hispanic voters in the state voting for Donald Trump.

"We need to reevaluate what is best for our party," stated Hinojosa as he submitted his resignation effective March 2025.

Even Cameron County, "blue" or Democratic for as long as anyone can remember, went 52.5% for Trump, exceeding Trump's national plurality, prompting some locals to suggest that Cameron County Democratic Chair Jared Hockema join Hinojosa in submitting his resignation.

As things stand, the Cameron County Democratic Party seems fractured, disunited, with one "club" for the northern part of the county and another "club" for the south.  The Southern Cameron County Democratic Party "club," for example, supports a distinct set of candidates not including all Democrats running for office in the county.  What's up with that?

As politicos in our county and across the nation love to say, maybe "it's time for a change" and "elections have consequences."

  1. The Democrats need to work more. Meetings at local places where people go: Market Square, the Mall, the health clinics, Charro Days, etc Like IDEA, that school is everywhere....meeting new parents, walking the neighborhoods etc

  2. Yes, he needs to resign, there isn’t a team first mentality with him and Gilbert Hinojosa. They run the democrat Party for themselves and whoever they want to elect. We need someone well rounded that can excite the people to go and vote. Jared is anything but exciting, not easy to approach, and semi snobby. Asking him for anything goes through 5 layers of approval (of his people) before you get a response, otherwise you are left waiting with no response. New leadership is warranted.

  3. I went to Jessica Tetreau's Facebook page as you suggested in the other article. She's removed all traces of her husband, Art Kalifa. She's only pictured with her dad and her children.

  2. Both should work for the Democrats. Two people: more ideas, more work and more events to raise more money. They need to start right now, before they are selected by the Party. I know that John Shergold wants to help and attends many events.
