Yankee HOF Catcher Yogi Berra, Blogger Jerry McHale

While counseled by blogger Jerry McHale to return to the "wit, self-deprecation and humor" for which he says this blog is noted, I must admit that Jerry's sports-analogy-laced article, published today, did give me a chuckle.

While I missed the humor and relevance to the McAllen blogger Jerry referenced and idolizes, I'm reminded of the gentle admonition of Hall of Fame Yankee catcher and king of malapropisms, Yogi Berra, to "take it with a grin of salt."

Yet, in responding to Jerry's Trump-like "alternate facts," I'll be mindful of the weight class discrepancy and gently pull my punches.

OK, Jerry, your left-handed compliment of my "extreme effort to clean up the sullied reputions of Tony Zavaleta, Hilda Silva and J.J. De Leon" begs the question: "Who sullied those reputations?"

Wasn't it you, Jerry, who posted their photos daily, sometimes in hideous form, calling them "stooges," "traitors," "backstabbers" and "cockroaches?"

No, you're not orange, Jerry, but you and DJT share the same modus operandi of insulting and denigrating your political opponents, hoping your catchy slurs will somehow stick with the electorate, making the candidates an object to be disrespected and/or pitied.

Jerry, surely your claim that you and Juan Montoya are "the most independent voices of South Texas" was tongue-in-cheek.  Nice one, Jerry.

Jerry, son, I was not "destroyed at the polls," as I endorsed no one, my policy since a disappointment in 2010.

My personal observation was that either of Eva Alejandro or Hilda Silva, with 53 and 44 years in education, respectively, would have been an asset for the local community college, but money, signage and a lust for power and control won out over student interests.

The thrust of several of my recent articles was that just as a poliquera who collects the "votes" of the disinterested in her neighborhood and sends them in as "mail-in votes" befouls and dirties democracy locally so do the politiquero political hacks who write denigrating articles for money, clothing, bar bills or whatever.

One correction, Jerry.  We'll not be on "opposite sides" in any forthcoming elections with respect to candidates, only in terms of approach, motivation and understanding.

As always:  "Let the reader use discernment." Matthew 24:15. (As a self-professed backsliding agnostic, my Scriptural quotes are selected on merit, not piety.)

  1. My first rule in selecting a candidate from now on will be to not vote for anyone paying Montoya or McHale to trash their opponent.

  5. Just for the record, Jim: The "opposite sides" observation was in reference to Juan. Nice writing. And great picture of me! I didn't realize how distinguished I looked with a moustache. I may have to grow it back.

    1. It's been my unfortunate habit to respond whenever my name is mentioned, giving my limited imagination another story angle. Of course, local icons Jerry Danache and Rene Torres contribute mightily, pushing this blog well past its expiration date.
