Reading up on Smithson Valley High School's football team before tonight's game, it appears their approach is to win with their defense, forcing their opponents into turnovers and the gameplan for tonight's game is to gain an early lead hoping to force Veterans Chargers quarterback Stone Montoya into a passing game.
Cornerback Zack Gingrich alone, pictured above, has scored four touchdowns this year on turnovers with three pick-sixes and one blocked punt.
“You get takeaways from QBs making bad decisions,” Gingrich said. “There are plays where the QB makes a good throw and we jump the ball and make a good play. But a lot of times, it will come from the D-line getting pressure on the QB.”
Smithson Valley's Nicholas Dudzikowski |
Another player waiting to pounce on mistakes is linebacker Nicholas Dudzikowski, a young man who's also returned two interceptions back for touchdowns as well as taking two kickoff returns "back to the house."
“You don’t know 100% that they’re passing, but if you have a pretty good idea that they’re down or it’s late in the game, they have to start throwing,” Dudzikowski said. “The other team is trying to come back and maybe they’re taking some risks they normally wouldn’t take.”
Kickoff for the two teams is 7:00 PM tonight at Corpus Christi's Buccaneer Stadium.
