Congressman Jim Jordan |
Furniture movers and a custom engraver are waiting on the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to decide who they want as Speaker of that body.
Normally, the winner of that office needs 218 votes from the 435 member House of Representatives, but with two current vacancies, that number has been temporarily whittled to 217.
With Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise recently nominated, then withdrawing, Republicans have emerged from behind closed doors with a new nominee awaiting final approval, Ohio Representative and former Ohio State wrestling coach Jim Jordan.
Jordan's coaching tenure came during a scandalous period involving alleged sexual misconduct by team doctor Eric Strauss.
While the prospect of Jordan as Speaker likely gave Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity a wet dream, the former coach is not even getting support from his old school's former wrestlers.
“Do you really want a guy in that job who chose not to stand up for his guys?” Mike Schyck, one of hundreds of wrestlers who say they were assaulted by a team doctor, told NBC News. . “Is that the kind of character trait you want for a House speaker?”
Another former wrestler, Dunyasha Yetts, added: “He doesn’t deserve to be House speaker. He still has to answer for what happened to us.”
