Zapata County Sheriff Raymundo Del Bosque

We have a "feel good" story for taxpayers first reported in Border Report about taxes on five Zapata County properties being "forgiven" by the outgoing tax assessor, a woman not named.

The delinquent taxes "forgiven" included $16,590 by Zapata County Sheriff Raymundo Del Bosque, pictured above.

After "forgiving" the delinquent taxes, the former tax assessor went to work for the Sheriff's Department under Del Bosque.

Zapata County Judge Joe Rathmell

The unlawful tax "forgiveness" did not set well with Zapata County Judge Joe Rathmell who worked with the new county tax assessor to have the taxes reinstated along with penalities for delinquency.

Rathwell said the former tax collector had "no authority" to cancel delinquent taxes and he was acting to protect the interests of Zapata County taxpayers by restoring over $100,000 to county tax collections.

Sheriff Del Bosque said it was all "political."

"The case had been closed.  I don't know why it's been opened by the current tax assessor.  It's just about trying to get someone else elected for my position."

A dozen or so Zapata County residents waited in the court's hallway to see how the matter would be resolved.
