Roy Cohn and Donald Trump |
When I posted on Facebook the irony of Trump surrendering to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, then telling his followers to "never surrender," an elderly Brownsvillian called me a "communist."
Well, his exact words were: "Those of you that promote communism will never fully grasp what he is doing."
Kids like me that grew up in the 50's remember when it was a huge insult was to be called a communist.
Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy and his sidekick Roy Cohn were quick to call politicians and even Hollywood actors not only "communist sympathizers," but "card-carrying communists."
Later the John Birch Society took up the same "red scare."
Is it the least bit surprising that Roy Cohn, in the 50's and 60's, was actually a mentor of Donald Trump, considered by some to be as close to Trump as his own father.
The New York Times reported that when Trump's legal difficulties first arose, Trump reportedly asked "Where's my Roy Cohn?"
McCarthy and Cohn ruined some lives back in their day using the technique of character assault, getting people black-listed as commies.
Trump himself used a similar tactic in 2016, vanquishing 17 Republican candidates for President with character assassination and personal attacks.
Trump learned well from his mentor Roy Cohn.
