Former President Donald Trump |
A debate among Republican candidates for President polling at least 1% in three national polls is scheduled for August 23 in Milwaukee.
Qualifying at the moment for the debate are candidates:
- Donald Trump
- Ron DeSantis
- Nikki Haley
- Vivek Ramaswamy
- Tim Scott
- Chris Christie
Trump, who's currently favored by 56% of Republicans for the 2024 nomination for president, has hinted that he may skip the debate.
Trump blamed Fox News for not recently giving him the news coverage they should, then suggested that he's above appearing with "candidates just polling 1%."
The real reason Trump may skip is Chris Christie, the former New Jersey Governor also running for the Republican nomination.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie |
Christie has been the only Republican candidate willing to criticize Trump, recently calling him a "liar and a coward."
When Trump made fun of Christie's weight, the former governor responded:
"Oh like he's some Adonis? Please," Christie said.
"There are tens of millions of Americans...who like me have struggled with their weight. I continue to struggle, I continue to try to do better...and what's that got to do with my competence for office?"
Trump told a group of his supporters recently:
"They're really coming after you. They're not coming after me."
Christie had a response for that:
“There’s no other, of the 200 million Americans he spoke about, who illegally retained classified national secrets after being asked politely, quietly and professionally for 18 months to voluntarily turn them back over after he left the White House,” the former governor said.
Trump, who dispensed of 17 Republican candidates in 2016 by belittling and mocking them, is not accustomed to taking direct hits of the kind Christie is delivering and may simply "chicken out" of the August 23 debate.
