Over the past decade and more, I've been a close observer of the two Cameron County political organizations, the Republicans and the Democrats, frequently attending the monthly meetings and events of both groups.
My overall impression of the two groups, based on those who actually attend the meetings, is that the Cameron County Republicans are Harlingen-centric, elderly and white, whereas the Democrats are overwhelmingly Hispanic.
The Republicans are decidedly more welcoming. Is that because I more closely fit their demographic, being old and white?
Actually, I think not.
When Ana and I, along with Laura Miniel, attempted to sit in a meeting of the Cameron County Democrat Women at Rudy's Barbecue in 2019, all three of us were given the cold shoulder.

It should be pointed out that Cameron County Democrat Chair Jared Hockema has always been cordial in contrast with the aloofness emanating from the rank and file.
On the Republican side, Chairperson Morgan Cisneros Graham seems determined to outwork the Democrats, hoping to build on the momentum from the 43% Trump garnered from overwhelmingly Democrat Cameron County in the 2020 election.
"We also need county chairmen committed to getting educated on every aspect of their position as well as every position they oversee. Some folks walk in thinking they can wing it and be a county chair and underestimate the institutional and statutory knowledge required," Graham stated yesterday.
Graham has also announced a training session, to be held in Harlingen July 31, called MISSION RED22.
In Cameron County, with a miniscule number of actual voters, can the minority Republicans be successful by outworking the Democrats?

It should also be noted that the Republicans recently gained a significant asset for the future with the election of Roy de los Santos as City Commissioner.
Could the well-received De los Santos play a larger role in the Cameron County Republican Party in the future?

DeleteJim why do you allow trolls to post? Anyway this is pretty simple for the most part we all cover the incompetence and corruption of local government - overwhelmingly Democrat. They do not like us so they will not welcome us. There are no Republicans to cover who are elected who push Republican issues. They have no reason to dislike us. The Democrats are very thin skinned and do not like our coverage. You wait if Republican politics emerges in policy discussions they will get negative coverage and then they will make us all personas non grata.

idiot, yes it must be true because a troll says it. Do you understand how much one pays in a mortgage, home improvement loan, car payment, home repairs etc? Obviously not. My monthly expenses are $4,000 a month. You actually believe the government is giving me $4,000 a month? I work my ass off to pay my bills, and increase my retirement account. Your lies are not fact - they are trollism. Trollism gave us Jan. 6th, Trollism has Florida with over 6k new cases of COVID every day. Every day because of trollism families which are fully vaccinated are contracting COVID and passing it onto their kids who are then ending up in the hospital. Because of trollism people in their 20's and 30's are begging for the COVID vaccine hours before they die. I will never contribute to trollism. There are consequences. After 20 years of blogging the one thing I do not need are clicks on my page. My readers like the fact they do not have to deal with the distractions of the trolls.
