De los Santos Celebrates Victory at Cobbleheads |
Roy de los Santos, perhaps Brownsville's first openly gay candidate, garnering 54% of the vote to his opponent's 46%, overcame a vicious homophobic mailout of unconfirmed origin, to defeat Jessica Puente Bradshaw for City Commissioner District 3.
The unofficial tally with all precincts reporting was De los Santos 894 to Puente Bradshaw's 753.
In District 4, newcomer Pedro Cardenas handily defeated incumbent and former Municipal Judge Ben Neece, 1045-498, 68%-32%.
These campaigns certainly provided a contrast in styles.
While De los Santos and Neece made themselves available to answer voter's questions at all the public forums, Puente Bradshaw avoided forums she felt were demonstrating favoritism on behalf of her opponent, but did appear on selective conservative podcasts..
Cardenas avoided all public forums, even internet podcasts, choosing to rely on his family's connections and a political machine.
