COMMUNITY RESPONDS TO HOMOPHOBIC MAILOUT

Jessica Puente Bradshaw

Yes, I did pull my article linking District 3 City Commissioner Candidate Jessica Puente Bradshaw to a homophobic, anti-Roy de los Santos mailout when she made a statement disassociating herself from the mailout.

Concerned Conservatives of Brownsville claimed responsibility for the flyer, but were not listed as a P.A.C. on the Texas Ethics Commission website.  I will call the Cameron County Election Office first thing Monday to see if they have information on the group.

The mailout repeated the untruth initially stated by Bradshaw's campaign manager John Barham that Roy de los Santos was "head" of the LBGTQ Task Force, although flyer spelled it LQBTQ.

The mailout said De los Santos supported "story time at the public library aimed towards small children," reinforcing the false notion that gays are more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals.

It also said De los Santos supported "transvestite/drag queen," another homophobic slur.

"Pending DWI charges" was the final claim.  That is true, although I understand it's a single charge pending.

While I promised to reserved judgement until all the facts were out, others were not so inclined.

Juan Montoya, publisher of El Rrun Rrun, released an article, BRADSHAW SMEARS DE LOS SANTOS WITH HATE-FILLED MAILER.

Morgan Cisneros Graham, chairperson of the Cameron County Republican Party, also weighed in:

Jim Barton I also was sent a screenshot of a comment asking if she condones or denounces what was sent out and how but it appears to have been deleted.
This seems to always happen with anything she runs for. Anonymous attacks, gossip...usually from third parties “helping out.”

When will people learn?

Local Republican, Realtor Craig Grove posted:

"This flyer reportedly posted by the Jessica Bradshaw campaign or supporters is disgusting. Roy De los Santos is a good person. No one is perfect but this type of discrimination is unacceptable. Roy has dedicated years of his life to our community. No one running right now can touch his track record of time and dedication to Brownsville! I 100% support Roy for Brownsville Commissioner and I denounce this type of disgusting discriminatory campaign material."

Rodrigo Moreno, the owner of Pink Ape Media Consulting, added:

"This is what hate looks like; This is what bigotry looks like. A group of so-called conservatives supporting a candidate that, in my opinion, has no qualifications to hold any public office has decided to act in such a despicable manner and try to derail a man that has given so much to our community. Bottom feeders, mud dwellers, political scum, they all rely on these tactics. I called on all my friends, red or blue, to draw a line and denounce this type of hate-mongering. We need to be better than this; Brownsville is better than this. Lowlifes are not welcome here."

There were others, like Ellen Tyma, who were supportive of the mailout:

Ellen Tyma

"So Roy is spending $60,000 for a nominal race to promote perverted ideas. His followers are defacing and destroying Jessica Puente Bradshaw's campaign posters. She is still the better candidate."

Laura Miniel cited the requirements from the Texas Election Code showing this mailout was not legally constructed.  I was unable to share Laura's research because of a formatting issue.

Hopefully, we will get answers soon.

  2. Jim: I am in no way JPB's campaign manager but am a concerned friend & supporter. When those mysterious mailers appeared, all of us working on the campaign were dumbfounded. As for Jessica, she was totally in the dark as to the origin of the mysterious mailers. Simultaneously, Jessica's supporters started receiving harassing phone calls and nasty email.Jessica and all of us have denounced anti-gay prejudice. And Jessica has gone on record that the mailers did not come from us. Roy, for his part, said that he had nothing to do with harassing our side and does not have control over all the LBGTQ folks, some of whom have even labeled Senator Lucio a homophobe. So I think it is best for all concerned to back off for a bit and take stock in what direction this campaign will go in its final week. Please know that I appreciate your professionalism of not taking sides until all the smoke began to clear. John Barham

    1. You attacked the Morgan Graham for denouncing the postcard so obviously you support what was in it by being so bothered that she stated facts about the party’s stance on specific issues. I’ve read your word vomit “distribute” John Barham and that flyer used the same kind of graphics and even some phrases you have. Nice try. You’re just the latest of Jessica’s rubes desperate to do her dirty work thinking she’ll keep her hands clean except you’re so sad you’re coming in at the tail end and she’s looking saggy and deflated unlike her ego. You fit well though. You’re a fake writer and she is a fake just about everything.

  3. Jessica supporters claim she didn't know about the mailers beforehand. Yet she, the candidate, is silent and refuses to answer the question directly! Hiding behind her rubes, what a joke and a coward.

  4. What a disgrace this campaign turned out to be. In a small town with a race in a single district, a smaller number of Republicans, and an even smaller number supporting the Qanon wacky stuff. She knows exactly who sent it. And she won't deny in writing that she knew this would be sent ahead of time. Did she ever answer you directly, Jim?
