ERASMO WEAVES THE EYE OF AGAMOTTO THROUGH COMMENCEMENT SPEECH AT VETERANS HIGH SCHOOL

Erasmo Castro
This past week BISD Board Member Erasmo Castro took a bit of heat for wearing the Eye of Agamotto to graduation ceremonies, even getting notice by the irrelevant, yet undistinguished, typer from McAllen, who labeled Castro the "Class Clown" in a forgettable story.

Castro hinted to me that there was indeed a method to his madness, something he said would be obvious when he addressed the 2019 graduating class at Veterans Memorial Early College High School on Thursday night.

"This week, my fellow board members and I have had the privilege of experiencing the graduation of hundreds of students," Castro started out.

"In each of these ceremonies, I have been wearing an amulet that has caused some to wonder and even write about the why."

Castro weaved references to the Eye of Agamotto throughout his talk, stressing individualism, not fearing being different.

"I wear the Eye of Agamotto because I am different.  To be different requires assertion of self, acceptance of being. . . . . .Dare to be different because you are the amazing you."

Actually, Castro is one-of-a-kind, frequently wearing vintage clothing, red shoes and bow tie, speaking with the cadence and flowery language of a preacher, but somehow identifying with young people in a way most older folk cannot.

    1. So, you were piggybacking as usual? Do you EVER come up with an original story, "journalist?" smh

    2. OK. You copy all the Brownsville bloggers' stories. As they say, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," so thank you for that.

Yet, your options may not be as limited as you suspect. No, you're not getting a gig at the McAllen Monitor as they would check with your previous employers. But, FYI, I just Googled "McAllen bloggers" and there are none, no one going to City Hall to monitor the mayor and city commission, no one checking on economic development, no one covering the school district in the "City of Palms."

It's an opening made for a McAllen resident with some semblance of journalistic skills. Do you know anyone who fits that description?

      Just a thought.
