AHUMADA, MARTINEZ, ALTHOUGH IN DIFFERENT RACES, PRESENT BROWNSVILLE WITH A CONTRAST IN STYLES

As if we needed a reminder,  Pat Ahumada, currently running for the City Commission, District 2, at his recent campaign event, once again, reinforced his obvious style differences with Tony Martinez, the mayoral incumbent seeking re-election.

"Come on in Mayor!," Ahumada announced, as Mayor Martinez stepped out from the shadows of La Hacienda Restaurant, the Ahumada event venue, dressed in a charro vest, accompanied by District 1 City Commissioner candidate Nurith Galonsky.

As if getting a mental flashback of the mayor's typically casual appearance for city commission meetings, Ahumada embarked on an impromptu lecture on proper decorum and appearance.

"And this is no reflection on the mayor," Ahumada started, although it was.

"But, let's get back to wearing coat and tie at city commission meetings, showing the citizens proper respect."

The two men are of similar physical stature, but Ahumada offers the handshake of a shrimper, someone who's held onto a rope a time or two, while Martinez is more genteel, likely resorting to zumba for flexibility.

While many describe Martinez as polite and personable in public, a lady told me at H.E.B. yesterday that she couldn't support Ahumada because he'd once been "rude" to her.

Behind closed doors Commissioner Tetreau describes Tony as "tyrannical," condescending to women,  while the outgoing De Leon finds him to be an "evil genius."

If during his eight years as mayor, Tony Martinez has NEVER briefed the public on his rationale for ANYTHING, Ahumada never stops arguing his position.

"Do you remember how much you and I fought over Fly Frontera?" Ahumada asked me during last Sunday's podcast.

I do remember.  We went back and forth on social media one night until I wrote my last comment at 3 AM and went to bed.  The next morning I saw a long-winded response from Ahumada date-stamped at 4 AM.

Several times at his recent event, Ahumada gave out his home phone number, reminding voters that he's always "accessible."

Despite being in different races, it almost seems as if Ahumada and Martinez are running against each other.

Perhaps they are.

  1. This city is in serious trouble.
Be very weary of anyone who Tony is campaigning for. Nurith Galonsky has never worked a day in her life. Her daddy will pay top dollar for every vote she gets.

    1. You don't state your age or current educational level. Middle school? Yes, a theme is needed for an editorial or thesis, but not so much for reporting on an event. Please check with your instructor because I don't want to lead you astray;

  4. Polite and personable? That was not my experience. It was more like arrogant and condescending.

  6. Either of them should be running, it is well known that none of them had done any thing good for the community.

  7. She done nothing for Brownsville or the Brownsville but she was giving a PUB position to keep the high utility rates for the citizens of Brownsville so the the big wigs get a big pay raise. The three top dogs at the PUB get nearly one million dollars together.

  8. I will never vote for that joker Pat "CHECK DWI ILLEGAL GAMBLING"Ahumada. Hell I would not let him be the dog catcher after he had that incident leaving hose dogs in a hot car! Let me put it to you this way, I would vote Charlie Atkinson for Mayor before I vote for Pat Ahumada! I will be supporting Jessica T.
