IS THIS WHERE SOME OF PUB'S 35% UTILITY RATE INCREASE IS GOING?

Nurith Galonsky

Last Sunday, during the Whine and Cheez podcast, the never-built Tenaska Power Plant came up.

Responding to our question about the 800 megawatt powerplant, Tenaska, that was never built despite an overall 35% utility rate increase, PUB Board member Nurith Galonsky gave this explanation:

"As far as I know, the money raised was not just for Tenaska, but for infrastructure, waste water, etc.  Even if the plant is never built, we have a need for more energy.  Of course, this is an issue I inherited, but if the money collected for Tenaska is more than what is needed, perhaps there could be some refund."

In December 2017 the D. Wilson Construction Company was awarded a contract to construct a new service yard for BPUB.  The winning bid was $16,864,000.00.

Recently, PUB put out a news release announcing the construction to begin in early 2019 and completed by fall on the new service yard.

Is this where part of our 35% utility rate increase is going?

  1. The Brownsville Herald reported at the time that only a small percentage of the increase was anything other than Tenaska. Moody’s and Fitch’s financial ratings praise the increases as being for Tenaska. Nurith is either feeding you Pink Ape Shit or is incompetent.

  3. It is baffling why more brownsville people are not outraged by PUB’s actions. You idiots get exactly exactly what you deserve. The people of Southmost will sell their souls to Galonsky for a chicken plate.

  4. Please check your facts. The images that you are showing are of the administrative building, not the service yard. The administration building is being built by Noble builders. The much smaller service yard project is being built by DWilson construction.

    1. Thanks. I actually had the correct picture initially, but then replaced it with the administration building.

  7. Jim, Is this the woman that sued the G.B.I.C board for not agreeing with her?

  8. I agree with anonymous @ 7:15 am.... how is this BPUB rate increase scam not getting more attention.... no one on the current city commission or PUB Board who supported or who has not tried to correct this wrong should get any consideration from voters. Say no to Longoria, Tetreau, or Galonsky on the ballot!!! All are self serving and obviously do not have the public’s best interest in mind.

  9. Please ask the PUB board of directors why the Tenaska money isn't immediately diverted to put free or very discounted solar panels on every person's roof. We could provide thousands of construction and installation jobs to locals, thousands of jobs to electricians, reduce people's utility bills and create the power supply that is needed. Rather than waiting and paying for a power plant that will never be built. It is a viable plan, please post here what they say.
