Mayoral Candidate Pat Ahumada Comments on Proposed LNG Plants at Port of Brownsville

Pat,

The voters will be interested on where you stand on the four applications for LNG plants at the Port of Brownsville. The plants may offer a few temporary construction jobs, although the engineers will be shipped in and the plants themselves likely built in South Korea. Millions of gallons of hot effluent would be dropped daily into the Bahia Grande while mercury, hydrogen sulfide, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons would be "dispersed" into our air supply.

Tony Martinez, his cronies at United Brownsville and Filemon Vela all support the plants. Where do you stand?

Jim,

Obviously you do not know my record as an environmentalist. To answer your question is that I do not support anything that will put public safety at risk. Having said this, if you will go back to 1990, I opposed the development of Boca Chica Beach and pushed hard to keep the beach in its' natural state. I introduced recycling in the 1990's and work hard to reforest our city, passed landscaping ordinances that we have today to bring balance into a sea of parking lots that we had back then.

In 2007, we expanded recycling and introduced a "Going Green" agenda with the ordinance to reduce plastic bags in our environment and landfill. Having said this, you know the city has no jurisdiction in the Port of Brownsville governance, which is where these proposed plants are to be built.

I am committed to work with what I have, which includes Space-X and LNPG plants by getting educated on how they will impact our city and doing what is within my power to protect public safety and hold those accountable that do not adhere to the guidelines or the standards that would put public safety at risk or our environment.

As a former shrimper, I am concerned for the estuaries and need to learn more about these proposed developments that can affect our waterways, soil and air.

Thank you for the question.

  2. In other words, you'll study the issue and get back to us. Typical Pat Ahumada. Let me see who (and how much) I'll piss off then determine if it's worth it. I guess we're still looking for someone who can speak plain English and say, "Because I am well aware of current issues in my hometown, especially this LNG industry at the Port, I can state unequivocally that I am FOR/AGAINST this type of industry and these are the reasons." We already know where Mayor Tony Martinez stands on this. How about you? No filler. No bullshit.

This sounds like a fait accompli on the LNPG plants, no?

  5. Sounds like a cop-out. Mayor Martinez has written a LNG letter of support. [ http://www.txlng.com/images/LOS_Mayor_Martinez_Jan2015LR.pdf ] Will Pat Ahumada write a LNG letter of support if elected mayor? Simple YES or NO will do.

  6. I trust Mayor Ahumada to make the right choice for Brownsville. He is a man that uses his brain not just his "gut" feeling.

  8. Dude said he was against it because he doesn't use the words you would like does not change that fact. But he is also being honest in that it is not something the commission will have control over, I didn't see much wrong with the statement .

  10. United Brownsville or one of the LNG companies likely wrote Tony Martinez's "Letter of Support for LNG". Tony has no mind of his own on issues, he is a puppet for others. Too bad Filemon Vela is supporting LNG exploitation of our local environment. They all seem willing to sacrifice environment for a few jobs.

  11. I don't support either one. But don't you think that someone running for mayor would have an opinion on the subject and have acquainted himself with the issue and any affect it would have on the environment. This was a bullshit political answer. Hey Pat trying to get money out of the LNG folks?

  12. It's a shame that, a third world country , like Matamoros Mexico knows more about the optional agreement signed in 2012 with Liquidified Natural Gas (LNG) than the citizens of Cameron county. The three so called amigos, mayors of Harlingen ( Card or Boswell), Brownsville, (Tony Martinez was mayor in 2012) and Matamoros mayor (Tomas Yarrington) signed the optional agreement with LGN in 2012. Remember convicted former DA Armando Villalobos also got something like $1million for covering up the corruption on the bridge that went no where. This is bull shit- our United State troops are fighting a war trying to protect our country and we have these type of assholes who are concealing and making deals with foreign countries without the citizens consent. These so called cowards would be the first to flee if our county would take action . They would flee to Mexico because most of them have ties to Mexico. This is my opinion

  13. I have been very involved with the Sierra Club effort to engage the public in this effort, and our understanding is that lease options have already been granted to five companies (I believe they are renewable). Three companies have already filed pre-applications with FERC. If all five make it through the FERC approval process, we will have an LNG city stretching from the Jaime Zapata boat ramp to 1.6 miles behind the Port Isabel HEB.We learned last week that Texas LNG will use electric motors to power two refrigeration trains, each using 100 megawatts, which they will buy from the grid which will be fed by the new Tenaska gas-fired power plant. Sign up for their newsletter at saveRGVfromLNG.com and they have a Facebook page as well as monthly meetings. LNG cargo tankers with Coast Guard escorts, should not be floating very close to the public beach at Isla Blanca, but that is the plan. Register your comments and concerns at www.ferc.gov, look for eComments under Documents and Filings and use docket numbers PF15-14, PF15-15 and PF15-20. It's time to speak up.
