The last thing they need is for a city function to stifle, stymie and squelch business on what is normally their best night.
awesome friday night at hueso. thanks cyclobia(sarcasm)
submitted by Rene Torres Although public education in Cameron County had begun in 1854, the city of Brownsville was able to set up its own...
Saturday's top story in the Brownsville Herald: "CycloBia attracts families, makes them downtown patrons"
ReplyDeleteAs is the norm in downtown Brownsville, this event closed off the streets to business other than the cyclobabble event. No respect for all the other venues around town and no respect for anyone not connected to the cyclobabble event. This is reflective of the ego of Commissioner Gowen....after all she is a Zavaleta and obviously what they plan and do is far more important than any other human being. On the one hand they talk about the need to upgrade downtown and on the other hand they disregard downtown businesses and block them off. What a city!!!!
ReplyDeleteGive them free circus and they will come, and organizers get the bragging rights of a great turnout, how bright lol
ReplyDeleteThey say they want people to invest in downtown; however they never consult with any of the businesses before closing the streets. I know that when I had a business on Washington they closed half or all of the block I was in at least 10 times in one year. They have their own agenda. Smile to your face, stab you in the back.
ReplyDelete90 % of commercial buildings owners in the downtown area, for many years had their buildings rented, until some genius in the city came out with the Entertainment District fiasco idea, abusively they just authorized the ED without consulting building owners, and started enforcing ridiculous ordinances, making almost impossible to register any business not related to night life in the downtown area , Result: Ghostly Downtown Brownsville
ReplyDeleteDid either the coffee shop or the city reach out to either prior to the event? A missed opportunity to work together?
ReplyDeleteno involvement or prior contact at all.
DeleteDoes this business complain during charro days when there are thousands of potential customers at their door steps?
ReplyDeleteHeard a girl on a bike got hit by a car on her way to Cyclobia??
ReplyDeletePlease. Build sidewalks and safe shoulders for bikers BEFORE you proclaim this place a biking city. How the F did the city invest 2 milllion in Casa Nylon and not in shoulders or sidewalks on routes between restaurants, businesses, grocery stores and neighborhoods, and yes, the cyclobia event. WTF. Let's not just block off downtown for a few hours, but make sure everyday bikers are not run over by cars en route to your bike event. Thank you.
Take a hit. Commissioners do not care about your drunken establishments. They are just a watering hole for people no one really takes serious. Think About It.
ReplyDeleteInstead of complaining, business owners should check out the calendar of community events and participate in public comment at the city commission meetings. As a downtown business owner myself I take the initiative of getting surveys done and represent downtown before the commission. Also recently a business owners association was formed and I am member of the association. Many businesses declined invitation to join after they are explained the benefits of representation. If you're a downtown business owner and would like to be heard and have your concerns or issues address please join the association known as "Brownsville Downtown United" by looking them up on Facebook and staying up to date with meeting dates. The association has had meetings with all the city commissioners present and we are very impressed with the time and action they take to listen and address our concerns and issues. If anyone is interested in learning more check us out on facebook.
