Melissa Zamora Responds Finally to Our Request for Press Releases~The Answer is "No!"

From the editor:  We did finally receive a response from Public Information Officer Melissa Zamora to our email sent 4/25/14 requesting to be placed on the press release list.  This reply came only after we mentioned her unresponsiveness in a blog article published this morning.  She claims the District Attorney's Office has a policy of NOT furnishing such releases to bloggers, only "media outlets." Would it be petty to point out the spelling error in her letter? Probably.  I highlighted it anyway just as I would have done for any "media outlet" failing to proofread their work.

Actually, young Ms. Zamora's list includes two Harlingen bloggers, My Leader News by Jerry Deal and My Harlingen News by Tony Chapa, featuring a daily Bible verse.  The list of official "media outlets" also includes the UTB Collegian and the political website Rio Grande Guardian.

Perhaps, it's time the District Attorney's Office thought this policy out more clearly and shared information more evenhandedly.  Information is conveyed differently than just a few years ago.

Juan Montoya's El Rrun Rrun blog passed the 5,000,000 mark in all-time page views recently, while, in a short time of operation, Mean Mister Brownsville has gone well past 1,000,000.  These are numbers probably staggering to Melissa, who used to pen the seldom read Blogging All Things Brownsville.

Good morning,

It is the policy of the DA’s Office to not include bloggers on the official media distribution list. However, all press released are available to the public via the DA Web site which are immediately posted upon distribution. I re-designed the DA Web site early last year to make it user-friendly. Prior to January 2013, press releases were not posted and much of the information now available on our Web site was unavailable.

Below is a list of media outlets I e-mail press releases to:
The Brownsville Herald
The Valley Morning Star
The Monitor
San Benito News
La Feria News
Los Fresnos News
Rio Hondo News
Port Isabel Press
The Collegian
The Raymondville Chronicle
Edinburg Review
Houston Chronicle
San Antonio Express News
The Associate Press
El Bravo
Periodico Expreso
Periodico El Manana
KVEO News Center 23
Ch. 4 (CBS)
Ch. 5 (ABC)
Fox (RGV)
Univision
Telemundo
Televisa
Telemundo
KURV
My Leader News
My Harlingen News
Rio Grande Guardian

Thank you,

Melissa Zamora

  4. If it were not for the public relations professionals of the world, I would have no idea it is Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month or that Weslaco's Historic Downtown District recently got some nifty state funding.

But each ding of my computer heralds the arrival of a new press release. I’m not complaining. I wrought this onslaught upon myself by being a member of the press and wishing every press release issued within 200 miles.

Most press releases I get are useless to me — especially the ones in Mandarin, though I like to imagine those emails convey grand announcements about political drama going to the heart of the politburo. I think they’re actually from a medical supply company, though.

Some press releases can be truly exhilarating, however.

The Brownsville office of the FBI is always swift to issue an alert whenever there is a bank robbery in the Rio Grande Valley. But my favorites concern special days, commemorative weeks and educational months.
There’s National Dairy Goat Awareness Week and World Sleep Day. There’s an International Day of Happiness and an International Day of Friendship. There is Record Store Day, Go Skateboarding Day, DNA Day and System Administrator Appreciation Day.

You could say every such proclamation gives me cause to celebrate whenever I open my inbox.

Whether I do is another question.

  7. A man killed Wednesday in a collision with a cement truck in Hidalgo County has been identified.

The County Medical Examiner identified Garcilazo De La Vega, 26, as the driver who died around 5:45 p.m. when he pulled out in front of the truck while exiting Expressway 83 near South 10th Street in McAllen. The driver of the cement truck will not face any charges.

  8. Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Now, you're saying, your mother could beat the French Army. This we don't doubt. But there's one battle-hardened organization out there we wouldn't want to mess with, especially on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

That's the local police. Cops are going to be out on the roads in full force looking for beer-holiday amateurs not unlike yourselves. Here's your battle plan:

    Drive sober.

  9. Melissa is a wannabe politician and is a very ineffective public relations manager. She has proven that she can't keep the DA's website up to date; she wants to be more involved with actual cases and wants to have her face front and center. Add to that an ineffective and very political DA and you have a situation where both the DA and his staff are defensive and circle the wagons at any and every challenge. We have more of this political favoritism to come from both Melissa and Luis Saenz.

    1. I rarely see Melissa on tv. It is always Luis. The website is up to date and looks better than other county websites. This sounds like you have a personal issue or you are a disgruntled employee. If you are defensive than you are an employee who has nothing to offer but a tight skirt or nice suit.

  10. Jim, her response is totally incorrect, grammatically that is. She must have graduated from a business school. Melissa can't write worth a shit.
