Dagoberto Barrera |
"You're always spending more than what the hell you have. . . . . Pete(turning toward City Finance Director Pete Gonzalez with a wagging, accusatory finger). . . . especially you must control your WILD taxation, your Mickey Mouse programs. . . .The Hudsons, the Porters they can probably pay more taxes, but we, the middle class. . our wallets are EMPTY brothers! We are down and out! Gas is $2.50 a gallon. Whoever thought they would see that?"
This was not the yellow-attired man's first performance of the evening. Barrera is the de facto leader in the pledge of allegiance, his voice booming over the mayor's microphone-enhanced voice, his hand exactly over his heart, enunciating each word of the sacred oath as if he means it. He follows up by declaring his allegiance to the State of Texas, reciting perfectly the words to that unfamiliar pledge. At least there is one patriot in the building.
On another occasion, Barrera joins his Cameron County Republican brothers and sisters for an Obama Bash at the Rancho Viejo Country Club. He sits behind the podium, wearing an official's badge, blurting out without a microphone or invitation: "You tell them Norma!. . . . Give it to them Frank!" Dagoberto is the Republican's mascot, a veteran, super patriot wrapped in the flag.(Many Brownsvillians have seen Barrera at the access road near Price Rd., shaded by the American flag, in full military dress, possibly even carrying a bayonet.)
But, as is common with those who see everything in black and white or even red, white and blue, there is an ugly side to this. With patriotism wound a little too tight, a respected military hero morphs into an 80 year old skinhead. At a Carlos Cascos event, when Cascos hints at problems with border violence, Barrera wants to be recognized. Cascos cautiously lets him start. As Barrera begins to describe the hordes "just across the river" who want to rob, rape and pillage us, Cascos quickly cuts him off with "Yeah, whatever."
At a hearing on the border wall, moderated by State Senator Eddie Lucio, Barrera is not cut off. He describes those living south of the Rio Grande, Mexican Nationals as: "not of our culture. They eat with their fingers, their heads bobbing up and down to the table like ducks" This may not be the message the national Republican Party leaders want to be associated with, as they try to position themselves for a larger slice of the Hispanic vote next time around.
Barrera may have surfaced again with comments on our article, "U.S. Land Grab of Mexican Territory in War of 1847 Based On a Lie." He took patriotic umbrage at our article with this comment made by someone signing as "Dagoberto":
Jim,
Santa Ana signed away all land up to the Rio Grande, he back tracked when he thought he could take back the land. The Mexican apologists, like you, want us to give back the lands. Everything Mexico has touched has turned to excrement. Maybe you and Nena should be repatriated with Mexico. You are traitor in the eyes of true Americans.
-Dagoberto
When I suggested that it was impossible to "repatriate" Nena and I since neither of us were born in Mexico, Dagoberto shot back:
-Dagoberto
So, in the eyes of the super patriotic Mr. Barrera, being a true American means despising and denigrating those of other nationalities. Is that what is represented by the flag of the United States, its constitution and heritage? After looking in the mirror, Dagoberto might see that he more closely resembles the Mexican monkeys he despises than those who came over on the Mayflower.
Religion and Nationalism are mental disorders.
ReplyDeleteYou have meta-magical beliefs and psychotic pathological delusions of grandeur. Dagoberto is a direct descendant of Jesus Christ and George Washington. Every time I hear this guy, I always say "Awww Grandpa!"
-BS
If Religion and Nationalism are mental disorders then it would be safe to say that Liberalism and Atheism are mental disorders as well. People are different, they hold different beliefs and values, Dagaberto as well those that seem to joy in his debasing are both wrong. Dagaberto has strong beliefs, he has always been that way for as long as I have known him, but those of you who are ragging on him because you disagree with him politically are just as wrong as he is.
DeleteYou have limited reading comprehension. The story was not about Dagoberto's political beliefs but his ignorant racism. A person who believes people who live on one side of a river are cultured, civilized and human, but those on the other side of the same river are lacking culture, uncivilized and animals is an idiot.
DeleteJim
Don't try and be coy, concesending or witty Jim, it is unbecoming of you. The story is more about Dagaberto being a Hispanic Republican than some off the cuff comment he made.
DeleteI was replying to the May 7:38 comment.
Now, you're trying to tell me what my story was about! How arrogant! Barrera's party affiliation is immaterial to me, whether Republican, Libertarian or Communist. Reread the story. It's simply about his racism.
DeleteJim
Jim, Hispanics are racist against themselves. I know it's not right but think about it, you're the only guy complaining. The rest of the Tejanos and Mexican Nationals in Brownsville, refer to the working Mexican class as wetbacks. We hate our dark skin, accent, poverty, family, friends and ourselves. I grew up around people just like Dagoberto Barrera, I'm used to it. We even have a disc jockey that plays pop music that refers to folks who listen to that genre of music as "Mojoe's," short for mojado, wetback.

BS,
DeleteI'm certain that on several levels Barrera is a decent man. My father-in-law, who literally swam the river every day before 1940, described Mexican Nationals as "wetbacks," denigrated anyone living in the U.S. who didn't speak English, a language he spoke with difficulty. He used the same terms Archie Bunker used to describe other ethnicities, yet was a deacon in his church.
Nena and I immersed ourselves for a solid ten years in a black community in Little Rock. Beautiful, "light-skinned" black women were ostracized and distrusted.
Curiously, in the 35 years we were away from Brownsville, Nena and I were never aware of being regarded as a "mixed couple." That perception only occurs in Brownsville.
I'm pretty certain that racism and inter-ethnicity racism is pervasive in many cultures.
Jim
Thanks for sharing Jim.

Yikes! Wish Dag would apologize to.you and Nena. This is an embarrassment to real proud Latino Americans. He has lost the respect of many normal Americans with that mentality. It is safe to assume he has a mental condition.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't piss in that dudes mouth if he was dying of thirst.
DeleteDags.
That asshole Barrera is an hypocrite, he looks like an indian from San Luis Potosi, he married his undocumented maid
ReplyDeleteHispanics dont want him and anglos laugh at him. Where does he belong?
ReplyDeleteHe's not important. When he leaves this earth,he will be quickly forgotten. Yes, the people will forget.
ReplyDelete(Barrera is the de facto leader in the pledge of allegiance, his voice booming) Probably just ensuring that any clandestinely clad Border Patrol agent knows he's in this country legally. Because would it be me, I'd throw his scrawny butt in a van and dump him at the ICE camp in Bayview. Without even batting an eye. lol.
ReplyDeleteDags.
Chingao, Dags! Le vas a dar al viejito un pinche infarto, buey! Then they'll have to bury the old fart in that yellow shirt and hat. lol!!!
