Yolanda Begum Looks to Karma As Campaign Signs Destroyed

by Jim Barton on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 1:24pm

The typical campaign sign, made out of corrugated plastic, covered with a thin plastic veneer, then stapled to a wooden stick is vulnerable. In the darkness of the night, supporters of an opposing campaign can lift them out of the ground and toss them into the bed of a pickup in seconds. One candidate for commissioner last spring lost so many signs, he vowed to run without them next time. He will probably rethink that, but it underscores his frustration.

Last night Yolanda Begum sent me a picture of one of her campaign signs, mutilated by a knife or cutter. Actually, the picture looks more ominous than simply removing the sign as it could be viewed as a veiled threat. Ms. Begum sent a short note along with the picture:

"People do bad things - and when you do, the world often revisits the wrong upon them. The trick is never to let this kind of thing get to you - and you have to find the path to peace. The way to that path is to make a lesson from the wrongdoing. In this case, the lesson is that while others may seek to do such wrongs, I know that my volunteers and staff never would do this to others and that we work towards a democratic and kind method of campaigning. A way in line with the forefathers of this country - that we work to put issues before the voters. This action, while ugly in its bad sportsmanship, is on the shoulders of those who did this. We will move on."

While a candidate can set the tone for the campaign, is it possible to control the actions of every single supporter or hanger-on? Of course not! Malicious mischief occurs every night in Brownsville, most of it not associated with politics. I'm not sure any of us can take any solace in karma or as Ms. Begum puts it: "People do bad things - and when you do, the world often revisits the wrong upon them. " My experience in life seems to refute that. Pedophiles, swindlers, even murderers frequently take their crimes with them to the grave. While their body decomposes, the hurt they caused lives on. Some of our own region's most corrupt leaders keep getting re-elected. An afterlife of suffering is a theory that balances things out in people's minds, but there is no evidence for it. As for this nation's founding forefathers, we've glamorized their lives. You probably wouldn't have enjoyed living next door to some of them.
My cynical viewpoint is that the Begum campaign actually benefits from having signs cut or the criticism that she speaks English with a pronounced Spanish accent. People do not like perceived dirty tactics. Any attempt to disqualify Ms. Begum on the basis of her accent does not set well either with an overwhelmingly hispanic population. If I played a leadership role in the Erin Hernandez Garcia campaign, I would discontinue that approach immediately.

  1. Ms Begum, you are a lady with class!
No matter how many signs they cut, or how many derrogatory comments they post....If this is all they got...They are pathetic!!

  2. If Erin has any class at all she should denounce this kind of disgusting conduct.

There are other candidates in the race. You assume it wasn't either of them or their campaigns. Jim, do you have any proof to back up yours and "Yoli's" allegations?

  7. They have the surveillance videos. Watch out the truth will come out. This is another trick to make her look like the victim. This shit (like everything that Dale's does) will backfire. Yiaiks!!!

  8. Jim, how stupid can you be. When you decided to start a blog and pretend to know about politics, you should have figured out that Evelon Dale was bad news. Everyone who knows just a hint of valley politics knows that. This is classic Evelon Dale behavior, she knows that Yolanda is in ann uphill battle and she has to do almost anything to show pity on Yolanda's campaign. I have no disrespect for Yolanda, but if you are so quick to point fingers at the Hernandez campaign, and you claim to have witnesses. POST THE VIDEO! The fact of that matter is that you all don't have anything to back up your accusations, otherwise you would have already posted your alleged surveillance.

  9. I think Ms. Begum has more personal enemies than she bargained for. Isn't it true that her late husband was married multiple times before he married Yolanda? Don't be so quick to blame any of your opponnents, those acts could have been done by anybody.

    Erin,

You're just silly. I've not made any accusations or claimed to have surveillance videos. I just simply posted the photo Yolanda put on Facebook. You have serious reading comprehension issues.

  12. Mr. Barton, why are you so obsessed with supporting Yolanda and bashing Ms. Garcia. I posted this same comment on the rrunrrun because I just don't get it. Lets see here. 1. We know Yolanda can't speak Engish, oops let me politically correct...SHE HAS AN ACCENT. 2. Yolanda could not fill out her application to be on the ballot correctly, at least that's what I was told. She had to be called in to correct it. 3. Yolanda could not even get her signs right. She forgot to put what precinct she is running in. 4. Yolanda is refusing to attend the Brownsville Cheezmeh forum or any forum because she is afraid of public speaking. 5. Yolanda hired Eveleon Dale, HUGE mistake. 6. In the last at least 10 to 15 years, Yolanda has only voted TWICE in this county, doesnj't seem like someone who really cares about the Community. 7. Now Yolanda is using the official Cameron County logo on her personal campaign stuff. BIG NO-NO. The only persons authorized to use the logo are elected officials. And you want me to vote for you why? Please explain. And no I am not Ms. Garcia, I am retired woman who VOTES!

  13. You all are stupid and dumb, if you think the electorate would continue to just sit back and take it ....YOU are wrong.

  14. did Yolanda Begum actually only voted TWICE in the last ten years? is this true Jim?
