As deadly floods tore through Kerr County, leaving at least 120 people dead and 160 missing, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem waited four days before approving crucial disaster relief. During that time, the botox-lipped lady was busy online asking followers to vote on which horseback portrait she should use as her official photo.
The delay reportedly slowed FEMA’s response, including the deployment of urban search and rescue teams, aerial surveillance, and extra call center support. Critics point to a new policy Noem introduced, requiring her personal approval for all Homeland Security contracts over $100,000, as a major reason behind the bottleneck during a critical window.
Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), a former emergency management official, is calling for a congressional investigation. He says Noem’s actions “may have worsened the tragedy.”
President Donald Trump, however, quickly came to Noem’s defense. In a Thursday interview, he claimed she was “the first one I saw on television” and said the response was “right on time.” When pressed about his administration’s cuts to the National Weather Service, which some say hindered early warnings, Trump changed the subject and instead blamed “the water situation” on President Biden, offering no evidence.
Noem, meanwhile, dismissed media reports about the delay as “fake news,” but criticism is mounting. Lawmakers and emergency response experts alike are questioning whether her leadership choices hurt the government’s ability to act swiftly.
While Trump prepares for a visit to the flood zone, many are still asking: why was Noem choosing portrait photos while Texans were facing disaster?
Republicans approve of her. She worked in Qatar, earning millions and then joined Trump's team in defending the rights of the millionaires. All the support for this patriot Republican. Sad that she is not blonde and looks Mexican.
