Angelina Resendiz |
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is demanding a full and transparent investigation into the death of 21-year-old Navy sailor Angelina Resendiz of Brownsville. Her body was found on June 10 near Naval Station Norfolk, 12 days after she was last seen. Initially marked as AWOL rather than missing, her case was reportedly mishandled by the Navy and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), echoing failures in the 2020 disappearance of Vanessa Guillén.
Despite early concerns raised by Resendiz’s family and fellow sailors, a missing persons report wasn’t filed until nearly a week after her disappearance. Her mother, Esmeralda Castle, says she received false updates claiming her daughter had been found alive. Castle led her own search with little support from authorities. A fellow sailor, Jermiah Copeland, is now in custody, with charges pending under military law. Both he and Resendiz had been assigned to the USS James E. Williams.
LULAC has written to Secretary of the Navy John P. Phelan and other top defense officials demanding accountability. They are calling for a clear timeline of events, consequences for any Navy personnel who failed to act, and public disclosure of any non-disclosure agreements related to the case. The group is also urging the Navy to review its handling of sexual assault and harassment claims, particularly involving women of color, and to uphold the protections established by the I Am Vanessa Guillén Act.
At a memorial service held at Naval Station Norfolk, Castle joined more than 100 of her daughter’s shipmates. She offered them comfort as they grieved and expressed regret they couldn’t do more. Resendiz was laid to rest in her hometown on June 27.
Still searching for answers, Castle recently appeared with LULAC in Washington, D.C., pushing for transparency and access to all documents through the Freedom of Information Act. LULAC CEO Juan Proaño said the Navy’s delays and miscommunications were unacceptable and preventable. “It’s not just a tragedy,” he said, “it’s a failure.”
Female soldiers need to be in alert at all times. They are surrounded by strong male soldiers that want to protect the country. A female soldier is still a female so the ladies have to be smart, sharp and demand respect from fellow soldiers. No smiles, no small talk etc Men think that if you smile at them, you want them. If you talk to the men, you want them. If you are nice, kind etc you want them. Say it loud: Marriage or nothing and they will run away. The same thing with MALE coaches, teachers, officers etc: Do not take my time away with your nonsense, get to work, retire and earn your benefits, you fools...then you can marry me.
