It's a tad bit disappointing that the Cameron County Republican Party couldn't have thought of it first; a detention center for immigrants surrounded by a moat of alligators and pythons. (We have some alligators in the Laguna Madre Wildlife Refuge and cottonmouths could have filled in for pythons.)

But, instead of Karl Burkhalter or some local Republican thinking on their feet, Ron DeSantis, in aviators and white galoshes, came to the rescue with "leadership."  Big Ron looked out over the Everglades to announce:  "I want these gawdammed illegals in a building surrounded by alligators and pythons."

Who's has ever looked at a wetland and thought it a place to house human beings, but then again, who views a python as a co-worker?

Apparently, the plan of Mr. White Boots is to place a detention center, complete with tents, trailers, and diesel-powered vehicles, right in the middle of Big Cypress.

The Miccosukee and Seminole people, who actually live there, have responded in the sort of quiet, clear way that sometimes makes Anglos nervous.

“This is our homeland,” they say. “Our ancestors are buried here.” That seems, to me, a perfectly reasonable objection, because, personally, I wouldn’t want a detention center built on top of my grandma either.

But nuance doesn’t play well at press conferences, and so the dump trucks keep backing up, the tents keep going up, and the National Guard stands watch like school crossing guards without a sense of humor.

Floridians have taken to calling the place "Alligator Alcatraz," a pretty accurate name I think. ICE agents are the normal animals brought in to guard, but snakes and gators are DeSantis' chosen ones with frogs and leeches still standing in the unemployment line waiting to be deputized.

In this Trump/DeSantis/Stephen Miller era, we've come to expect insensitivity, even heartlessness, but especially bulldozing the environment for internment camps.  The G.O.P. talks about freedom but builds jails in the swamp.  Likely, Winter Floridians will come out of their trailer parks in their colorful Jams just to watch ICE's swamp unit.

The Republican heroes
