Jefferson Davis Rock

The Cameron County Republicans monthly meeting at the Elks Lodge/American Legion Building took on a decidedly religious tone, not just with Pastor Brad, the blessing officiant of the City Commission, imploring the Almighty's hand, but Congressional Candidate Keith Allen thanking God in prayer for placing Donald Trump in the Presidency.

In a situation where a short, silent prayer might do, these prayer givers reminded me of Jesus words in Saint Matthew, Chapter 6, Verse 7, New International Version:  "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words."

But, what do I know?  I'm just a backsliding agnostic.  Anyway, the idea that the God of the universe would "send" a man who's paid for sex his entire life, bears false witness every time he moves his teeth and wants to deport God's black, brown and yellow children while encouraging white ones to emigrate from South Africa, is beyond ridiculous.  Who even wants to admit the existence of a God that would support that?

Karl Burkhalter

Oh, just so you know, local Republicans still have their collective panties in a wad over the moving of the Jefferson Davis rock.  Karl Burkhalter said so from his seat and later offered me evidence that it was Jefferson Davis who wanted to free the slaves, not Abraham Lincoln, despite the fact that Davis owned 113 slaves.  I didn't tell him that Donald Trump also claims he's done more for Blacks than any President before him and that the KKK's David Duke kindly wanted Negroes to have their own country--in Africa.

Pedro Cardenas, Nurith Galonsky

Oh, BTW, Nurith Galonsky and Pedro Cardenas mentioned their respective candidacies for the City Commission, Cardenas in District 4 and Galonsky in At Large B.  Neither said anything about slavery.

Anyway, it felt like I'd gone to church, not to observe the celebration of the mass, but to connect with fundamentalists in rural Arkansas at the Church of Trump.  I'll not be back anytime soon as Trump worship just doesn't appeal to me and holding up a Bible is not the same as following it.

  2. Jim, did you ask Pedro and Nurith why they were silent on the issue of slavery and the rock that Cameron County Republicans care so much about?

  3. This was an ugly monument. The Jose Marti monument was beautiful and was also removed. Time to do something pretty and disguise it so that nobody know that it represents the Confederates, slavery etc Lights in shape of flowers, lights of different colors all year long in the park etc

  4. First, get the name of your Organization correct. It was a meeting of the Republican Club of Brownsville. And your report sounds very ignorant.

    1. I referred to them as Cameron County Republicans. Were they not from Cameron County and not Republicans?
