From the editor: We have another reported case of sexual assault within the Brownsville Independent School District, this time at Pace Early College High School.  (Of course, as always in our system, the alleged perpetrator is presumed innocent and I applaud Superintendent Dr. Jesus H. Chavez for his quick action. )

I've somewhat of a connection to this incident as one of my grandsons goes to Pace, but also, because my own father, Roy Lenard Barton, who passed away in 1969, was a sexual predator.

That's why, after some consideration, I shared on this blog the testimony of Anne Holden, the sister of Jerry McHale, about Jerry's alleged sexual assault of her some years ago.  I've seen firsthand the emotional and psychological effects of sexual assault on victims.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An employee of James Pace Early College High School has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting another employee, according to Brownsville police.

Oscar Rodriguez, 53, is charged with sexual assault, a second-degree felony. Rodriguez is listed on the Pace Early College HS page as a math teacher.

On Wednesday, the Brownsville Police Department responded to James Pace Early College High School regarding a report of sexual assault involving two school employees.

The victim in the case told authorities that during their lunch break, they went off campus with Rodriguez. During the break, Rodriguez allegedly touched and penetrated the victim with his hands without consent.

When they retunred from lunch the victim in the case told campus administration about the incident.

Brownsville PD arrested Rodriguez and he was transported to the Brownsville city jail.

His bond has been set at $50,000.

ValleyCentral reached out to the Brownsville Independent School District for comment on the arrest and received the following statement.

“The Brownsville Independent School District confirms that an employee at Pace Early College High School was arrested yesterday by the Brownsville Police Department on allegations related to a sexual assault that occurred off-campus,” the statement reads. “BISD is fully cooperating with law enforcement as they continue their investigation. The district assures the community that no students were involved. Out of respect for the victim’s well-being and due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not release additional details at this time. BISD also maintains its policy of not discussing personnel matters publicly.”
