| Dwellings built and financed by boxer Manny Pacquiao for the poor |
At 77, I'm still learning, sort of like a smart middle school student filling in the blanks and connecting dots.
Years ago, Jerry Danache explained to me the synergy between Acapulco and Manila, the historic trade connection between Mexico and the Philippines, a tidbit of knowledge that helped me understand why so much in Cebu City reminded me of Matamoros.
As I walked the streets of Cagayan de Oro, I saw tough-looking boxers jumping rope, but all of them returned my "hello."
Cebuano, one of the languages of the Philippines, closely resembles Spanish, explaining why trashcans are labeled "Basura." Of course, much of this country of 700 islands prefers the Tagalog language.

On a dark, rainy night in 2018, my now wife, Ana Adiong, wearing a house dress, met my taxi in Bugo, a suburb of Cagayan de Oro, surrounded by miles of neatly manicured pineapple fields owned by the Del Monte Corporation.
The malls in the Philippines, well, in Asia, make the Mall of America in Minneapolis look like a rundown shopping center. A couple hundred thousand walk these malls any time of day, looking down at the ice rink on the ground floor, taking in the music and the lights. The Philippines, like Mexico, is a country of both wealth and poverty.
Back to boxer Manny Pacquiao. His presence is felt everywhere, just like the lifesize cutout of Stephen Curry I nearly ran into at the mall.
Anyway, I quote Mr. Pacquiao:
"I'm so happy giving this houses free to my constituents in Sarangani Province from my own pocket more than thousand families are the beneficiaries. and i'm still building more because i always believe what the Bible says; 1 Peter 4:8-10 NIV
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. Thank you Lord for everything even some people are criticizing me but I'm still happy because you live in me."
