BISD CANDIDATE OTIS POWERS, JR. SHARES HIS VERSION OF CASTRO INCIDENT ON EL RRUN RRUN BLOG

Erasmo Castro, Otis Powers, Jr.

It was not entirely unexpected that BISD candidate Herman Otis Powers, Jr. would have a different version of the incident reported in this blog as occurring at Wednesday's  B.E.S.T. campaign forum, held at the Brownsville Public Library.

Here's an excerpt from our report, detailing the interaction between Powers and Castro:

"I'll take you outside and beat the shit out of you!" threatened former BISD trustee Herman Otis Powers, Jr. to Erasmo Castro at a BISD Candidate Forum held at the Brownsville Public Library Wednesday evening.

"He just threatened me!  He just threatened me on live videotape!" Castro responded.

The upset seemed to have been building during the forum, especially when Castro repeatedly brought up letters requesting donations as large as $7,500 from vendors sent out by both Powers and his sister-in-law, BISD trustee, Dr. Sylvia Atkinson.

Castro hinted that such vendors, especially insurance vendors, don't give money "for free" and the results impact the students, teachers and education within BISD.

Respected local blogger Juan Montoya of El Rrun Rrun, presents a different version of events, likely Otis's version, in his blog article today.  Note the blog's description of the event:

Powers, of course, denies it, saying that after Castro made numerous insinuations of him influence-peddling and back-dating contracts of BISD employees he had had enough and told Castro that "if he wanted to take the gloves off, we could."

Actually, there's not a world of difference between:  "I'll take you outside and beat the shit out of you" and "if he wanted to take the gloves off we could."

Both versions are an invitation to violence initiated by the volatile Powers.  This attempt to intimidate, added to Power's track record of fraud, while previously serving on the BISD board, disqualify him from serving again.

Actually, Powers has already accomplished what he set out to do years ago with his "service" to Brownsville, with three close relatives placed in positions at BISD with salaries said to be in excess of $100,000 annually.

  2. Montoya brought up cyber bullying like it matter in a debate where two men were sidebyside. You’re right that Montoya corroborated your story. Only one person threatened the others with physical violence in person. Neither have threatened the other over the internet.

  3. There is indeed a difference between the two treats. "I'm gonna beat the shit out of you " is a pretty clear intent to do physical violence. "Take the gloves off" could mean he is going to start bringing up your mans history of criminal acts, cyber bulling and other questionable behavior.

There you go again, Barton, standing up once again a-la-Hasse behind an extremely flawed candidate. You are right. There is quite a difference between "beating the shit out of you" and "taking gloves off." If Castro is sure and he has the live videotape to back it up, he should file criminal charges. Otherwise STFU. Powers could easily say that "taking gloves off" means we doing dirty politics (taxes, arrests, etc.), not physical violence politics. Big difference. As for the other stuff about fraud, unless you have the goods, I believe you're treading on thin ice IMHO. In other words: if you're right about the fraud thing, you should have some kind of evidence (not blog entries) to back it up.

    1. You're a bit challenged. Court documents in the 2010 Tony Juarez vs. BISD trial show the fraud by Powers. The rest of your "reasoning" is also flawed. Please, try to think and write more clearly if you're able.

    2. no need to puff up, Barton, you're still the guy who turns the lights off when the coach is showing film. all I am humbly suggesting: don't tell us, show us (or tell us and show us) and educate us. Don't tell us to be pissed off. Quote from the court document and let us be shocked and pissed off. I, too, believe that Powers is a loose cannon and, much like Castro, unworthy off any political office. Maybe the fraud stuff will persuade me to stay home and watch a Rifleman marathon. How's the Toucan? We missed you Taco Nite.

    3. I published the court document quotes in an earlier article, so, obviously, you're not a recent, regular reader. BTW, the Toucan was OK,not the same, though, without your drunken banter. What happened? Momma grounded you?

    4. It'd be nice to have a Momma to ground me but, like you, I lost the rudder and anchor a while back so I'm adrift at sea, ping ponging from bar to bar, looking for the meaning of life, occasionally snagging some uncomplicated and acquiescent teacher on Taco Tuesday at Toucan's. Lively joint.

    5. The only RGV references to "Taco Tuesday" on Google were associated with Suerte Bar & Grill and Taqueria el Matador, both in McAllen. Every day is taco day in Brownsville.

    6. Barton,

      Publish Erasmo's court documents.

  6. "Taking the gloves off" it means going dirty, like bringing up arrests or running negative ads. Powers was saying he could go low too if that's what Castro wants to do. It's not a physical threat.

    1. He could have done that during the forum if he was intellectually able, but, thanks for the nice spin.

    2. Hitting under the belt, against the ropes, and taking the gloves off are a handful of American idiomatic expressions learned organically by growing up in America. Are you some kinda Commie, Barton? Who's Leo the Lip? Do you like BEER?! I like beer! Let's go rope-a-dope!
