ALEX DOMINGUEZ 'COULDA BEEN A CONTENDER"

"I coulda had class.
I coulda been a contender.
I coulda been somebody,
instead of a bum,
which is what I am.”

Terry Malloy character,
played by Marlon Brando
On the Waterfront, 1954

Alex Dominguez
Alex Dominguez blew it.  Yes, he "coulda been a contender" in the 2018 run for State Representative, District 37.

Alex could still do it, win a position in the Texas House in the runoff election, if he adds Arturo Alonzo's 15.12% of voters to his 36.44% for a majority of 51.16%.

But, many of those who voted for Arturo Alonzo would likely have been Alex Dominguez supporters had not Dominguez, as a county commissioner, made such an incredibly stupid decision, personally and politically, to give Texas LNG $373,000,000 in tax abatement.

As poor a representative Rene Oliveira has been, Dominguez proves, by this one decision, he will be no better.
What was the young man thinking?  Is he the county's version of City Commissioner Cesar de Leon, out for what he can grab?

LNG is a short-termed profiteering mechanism with a shelf life of two decades at best. Three LNG plants from the Port of Brownsville to Port Isabel will eventually leave our once pristine coastal area with a 28 mile pile of toxic, 500 foot high metal junk, with cleanup costs way beyond our means, while sabotaging the tourist industry.

Oh, yes! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! That's bull shit!

LNG firms do not hire newbies, except in security, janitorial or landscaping positions. It's a dangerous operation. They will bring in workers with actual LNG experience. Liability issues alone mandate this.(Notice, that even the pipeline companies have brought in outside welders and crane operators, etc. from Arkansas, Oklahoma, even Wyoming!)

I'm sorry guys. Alex Dominguez is as wrong for our area as Rene Oliveira and Oliveira is a total tool.

It will be interesting to see if any of Alex's political contributions can be traced to LNG.  These multi-billion dollar LNG companies are relentless.

When the Point Isabel School District rejected over $200,000,000 in tax abatement, an LNG company tried to sweeten the pot with charitable donations to the district, offered to dredge the Port of Brownsville channel, etc.  They are relentless and will not give up.

Had Alex chosen to listen to S.P.I., Cameron County's tourist industry, the environmentalists and other concerned citizens, he would have had a built-in hardcore constituency that actually votes.  That might have been enough to push him over the top against the ineffectual Oliveira.

What "coulda" been!

  1. 100% agree. This should have been a shoo in. Olivera has made bad choices. But no one is going to vote to incinerate their own neighborhood in a Texas City like LNG inferno disaster. Voted for Alonso as 'none of the above'. WE have a nice island, with many jobs! Jobs in tourism, shrimping, fishing, hotels, investment, wildlife, rentals, restaurants, travel and whoever would sell us out to to trash the place must be clueless!! He was doing the dirty work of sucio Lucio. Worst deal you ever made young man, taking advice from the sucios who only look out for themselves! Guessing he struck a deal with the Lucios to vote for LNG. They probably promised to deliver their full support to topple Olivera in return. In reality their support meant nothing, he couldn't break 40%. He had the support of the blogs, but the voters get in the booth and they are like, do I really want to see my kid's school explode in a ball of flames? Its your hide being hung out to dry in this election.

  2. The contrasting posts make for a good analysis, and great balance.

  3. I voted for Arturo Alonzo. Definitely will not for for Dominguez in the runoff. Alonzo supporters will either stay home or vote for Oliveira. Oliveira will win the runoff.
