BROWNSVILLE LOCALS ALERT TO REPORT BURGLARY, THEFT

Sunrise Mall security noticed a man in the mall's concourse after the mall had closed, and carefully monitored his actions, until they observed him stealing bottles of perfume from a vendor kiosk.

Mall security quickly called 911 and  Brownsville Police Department officers apprehended Jose Ruben Ortega, 46, ascertaining that Ortega had several theft warrants pending.

The Brownsville Police Department Facebook page declared that the "subject (Ortega) was charged accordingly," likely with burglary.

On the same day the Brownsville Police Department compiled a police report based on information received from the Brownsville Firefighters Association claiming "theft by public servant," charging that Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo had stolen $8,000 from the association's political action committee.
