New Brownsville Blogger Finds Hints of Racism at Brownsville Historical Museum

From the editor:  Juan Fidencio Trevino, the publisher of the Brownsville Bright, a blog recently joining the local blogosphere, has uncovered what he feels are hints of racism at the Brownsville Historical Museum.  We repost his recent article below, which can be found at jtrevbtx.blogspot.com:

A Bias Set in Stone

Meet Craig Stone. Since June of 2013, he has been the Program and Education Coordinator at the Brownsville Historical Museum (1 and 2), an institution dedicated to "preserve, educate, and promote the history, heritage, and cultural arts of Brownsville exhibitions." However, I am disappointed to inform you that Mr. Stone is also an active member of the 6th Brigade in the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, meaning that he holds a view on the American Civil War that does not coincide with historical facts.

This does not sound like a man who should be considered a reliable educator or museum coordinator, but maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's take a look at the evidence.

I recommend you read my last few articles on the festering Confederate presence in Brownsville. In the first, I present the history surrounding the Civil War and the short-lived rebellion that was the Confederate States of America, with historical quotes from relevant figures and documents, while the second points out the injustice our museum committed by promoting the glorification of the confederate movement but disregarding Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, a man whose words and actions were used to liberate rather than oppress, the day after.

Long story short: Northerners grew concerned with the South's reliance on African-Americans for slave labor. The South became defensive. Physical conflict. The South decided to form their own nation so they could do as they pleased, keeping slaves. The North denied their secession, defeated the South, and outlawed slavery, paving the way for racial equality. The 1902 SCV Constitution states that the group's purpose is "to instill into [their] descendants a proper veneration for the spirit and the glory of [their] fathers, and bring them into association with our Confederation." In reality, they attempt to justify lingering bits of racist memorabilia as cherishable historical pieces of nostalgic and educational value, and they are very defensive about their stuff.

On December 19th, 2015, Brownsville citizen, Antonio Castillo, started a petition to remove the Jefferson Davis Memorial, a physical manifestation of outdated bigotry on public display, from Washington Park. Two days later, Stone shared a counterpetition on his Facebook page, urging people to oppose its removal.

His cause is supported by James Mills, Vice President of Brownsville Historical Association's Board of Directors, who told The Brownsville Herald "we have a lot of dark history in the past" and that "we can reinterpret it today but it doesn't change the past." He thinks "it is important that it stays there in Washington Park." This statement shows that Mills either does not understand that there's a difference between acknowledging and glorifying these dark times or simply does not respect people of a different color.

Also speaking for the memorial is Eugene Fernandez, Old City Cemetery Coordinator, who very passionately expressed how he would defend it from "these bandy-legged upstarts." I don't know what he means either, but that "scratching and scraping" he mentioned sounds like a physical threat.
Favoring a twisted version of history over fact undermines Stone's credibility as an educator and museum coordinator. Glorifying those who fought for the right to oppress others strips him of any respectability as a human being. His activity on social media is consistent in showing his southern pride, even going so far as spreading revival propaganda!

He is as much a representative of Confederate racism and stubbornness as the Jefferson Davis memorial, and, in order for Brownsville to progress, they must both be removed from their current positions as soon as possible.

Consider giving him a break, Jim. I mean, they found a uniform that would fit him. That right there is probably the one and only plus in his life. And I'm being serious. Without a smirk on my face.

  2. A Neo-Confederate group is threatening to sue the city if they attempt to move the memorial to the museum. So much for supporting education and respecting ALL Americans... I guess they haven't heard that Confederate sympathizers lost in court against the University of Texas at Austin and the City of New Orleans.

  5. Craig Stone has done more for the community than this pre-pubescent pipsqueak blogger and Antonio Castillo combined. Where was Castillo twenty years ago? He sure as hell wasn't protesting this monument. Hey Castillo, was it less offensive then? It looks to me that his wife moved down here (six months ago) and was offended by the monument and is using her husband to carry on this charade of a crusade. Fact: No one in Brownsville gives a damn either way! Listen up Castillo, it's a FUCKING rock. It's not a FUCKING symbol of racism! It's not a FUCKING monument of Jefferson Davis beating a FUCKING black woman. Let me say this again so both pipsqueak and Castillo will understand this. IT IS A FUCKING ROCK! This is the same BULLSHIT that happened when they relocated the Stillman Ranch House. "Charles Stillman may have raped young Mexican ranch hands there." "It's racist against the Mexicans". NO IT ISN'T! It's a FUCKING house, nothing more. Hey Castillo, if you're going to go on a one man crusade against anything offensive, why don't you have the FUCKING sewer system removed. It was in fact the location where prominent women of old took the shits that birthed our current generation of DUMB SHIT politicians. YA BASTA!

    2. The Stillman house is simply a representation of an historic building but a rock with an engraving paying homage to a racist form of government is a symbol no matter how much you wish it wasn't so. I remember this "rock" when it was on Palm Blvd. I don't think it should be displayed as a tribute though I do think it should be displayed in a museum setting as a symbol of our past.

    3. That granite stone holding the traitor's name has done more than Craig Stone and you, anonymous(coward?), combined, at least at learning basic history, but of course you are not to blame, I blame Texas Historic Society... Are you a traitor friend of Castillo's, you seem to know a lot about him and his family?...... On the symbol itself, why don't we have monuments to all other traitors and countries that have ruled over this land, like Mexico, better yet France, or all the native of Americans?

  6. Perhaps Antonio Castillo should have reworded his petition to RELOCATE rather than REMOVE, since REMOVE has negative connotations which then could be misinterpreted by many. (Remove = destroy!!!!!!!!) As always, people tend to "complain" (petition) without providing a solution, which could have been to RELOCATE the rock, eerrrr, "monument" (icon that blandishes the Confederates attempts to secede with underlying (a lot) of negative racial, cultural, societal implications). Yes, we know that Brownsville was known as the Back Door to the Confederacy and have to "thank" the confederacy for making Brownsville a flourishing city compared to the rest of the country/ies during that era, but those were some tumultuous times. We can respect these lives (the Confederates), but not so much these ... how can I put it? ... bad ideas? (don't know how to say it) ... Move it to a museum in other words and erect something that represents and gives Brownsville hope! Because really, ... there are only a few fellow Brownsvillians that understand the implications and connotations of this, much less the rich history we have, be it be good or bad. But now in the present we have a bad reputation, which we should erect something, as I have stated, something that represents our hope and hard work to help our city and make Brownsville Bright (I'm just tying in Juan Trevino's blog into this and it works), but not in a time where oppression was present, but rather opportunities and equality for all, that us human beings, citizens of the US of A, and most importantly proud Brownsville Residents, either new, old, young or old deserve. ... ... Just making a Brownsville Observation, here.

I was still in public school here in Brownsville 20 years ago. When I reached high school, I did bring up to the city commission. Back then, teens were not taken seriously. We have an intelligent group of commissioners this time.

As far as doing things for the community, I've worked as an educator at different capacities - from elementary school to the college level. I've worked all over Texas, including the RGV. Not only do we help public school students, we promote higher education. We also do our best to bring back those who dropped out and encourage them to pass the GED test. We continuously register new voters on a regular basis and get them involved in politics. Voting is a wonderful way of changing things in this country. Oh, and I also served my country by enlisting in the US Army. Any other questions?

I was born and raised here. This is my community and I will continue to help make it better. Old timers who still insist on "honoring" racists should step aside. Millennials will be the new city leaders.

Brownsville Bright was created as a way to help the community. As I just started in January, there is no way to compare my near non-existent list of accomplishments and good deeds to Stone's extensive list. However, while I will always support progressive movements and present myself positively, Stone has dropped the ball by supporting inaccurate history while employed at a museum and fighting to keep a racist monument. It was time for Brownsville citizens to see the person he is.

  9. Racists? This city is run by hispanics, and hispanics make up 95% of the population. If anybody feels racism in Browntown, it's the few white people you see from time to time at the farmers' market. Who gives a shit about a monument? If you can't see it from your house, find something else to butt hurt about. Every city entity is embezzling the citizens blind, and nobody cares. The streets are fucked, traffic is fucked, city planning and infrastructure is fucked, city ordinances are fucked, the ISD is fucked, the discourteous people suck, and instead of being offended by the scumbags at fault, there is butt hurting about a stupid monument that nobody even knew was there. It's funny how Brownsville is honored when Hollywood comes to town for filming. Brownsville is flattered by the misconception that it is because of our historic nature. Bullshit, they come here to film scenes that can be portrayed as shitty Mexican ejidos. It's a slap in the face. Brownsville isn't the place where we grew up anymore, and not for the better. Wake up! The city looks like shit and the whole city needs either a paint job or demolition. Where are the ordinances and enforcement that prevent idiots & half-assers from making a town look so shitty. It's ridiculous. Imagine what visitors must expect of our city when they fly into the turd of a terminal at the Brownsville Airport. They surely have there expectations met when they travel down Boca Chica, or to 48 towards the island. What a shit hole of decrepit homemade plywood signs, expired potholed asphalt parking lots, dirtbag looking businesses, and gutters of garbage along streets where traffic doesn't even flow. It gives visitors a good look. Thank goodness that downtown isn't on the way to anywhere, anymore. A whole city where EVERY light is out of sequence with the next one, stopping traffic at every light and creating a 3 light cycle wait to get 100 yards down the road. Flying out of our airport departure terminal confirms the experience and disappointment with one more insult to injury on the way out of town. The city looks like shit and we have every city entity stealing Brownsville blind and patting themselves on the back. What a shit hole we have made of what nature intended to be one of the most beautiful places in Texas. Now our city is entertaining speculation building for future business. How about we clean up the damn mess before we waste money on empty buildings in developments that only pass under the table money to opportunistic thieves. Shame, shame, shame.

Yes, it's already 2016 and it's a shame that we have to drag humanity forward. However, this won't be the first time that Brownsville residents are late to catch up to the times. Wasn't the last battle fought here in Brownsville AFTER the Civil War had already ended? Stop being intellectually lazy. Stop sympathizing with the racists. Some of you need to wake up and evolve. 21. I'm not white but I do agree whites are a minority in Brownsville. All of us have people in our own history who are kind of embarassing.

Part of me that recognizes these confederate lovers as harmless goofball history geeks. But some of the comments from them have shown clear undertones of, if not outright racism. Hard to say. Is the stone overtly in your face racist, like flying a Confederate flag over the capitol? No, it's just an old monument. But some people view it as inappropriate and upsetting, right in the middle of a public park.

I'd say move it to a more appropriate place, where it fits in the context of its history. The Palo Alto or Resaca de la Palma battlefields would be an idea, since Jefferson Davis did fight in the Mexican American war, albeit not in brownsville.

It could be an opportunity to debate the idea of the "Lost Cause" beliefs, the Southern version of the rebellion. Seen in such movies as Gone With the Wind and in literature. Jefferson Davis was a central figure in the "Lost Cause" ideology, with one of the largest funerals ever seen at that time. The "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" romanticized the old South, explaining the South's secession as humble men fighting for states rights instead of slavery, kindly slave owners looking out for the wellbeing of their slaves, archetypes of the noble farmer veteran bravely defending his home from Union intruders, and the pale southern belle. Not saying I agree with it, it was the narrative of the time, and Jefferson Davis one of the stars of the sad story, the 'doomed widower fighting for his home against overwhelming odds'."

As a member of the Brownsville Historical Association I know these people that want to keep this rock, and they are not bad people, like you all make them out to be. They are not out there in white gowns lynching people, or burning crosses. They are merely people who like and want to preserve history in Brownsville, or want to pay tribute to their ancestors.
Your generation is not the only generation living in Brownsville, so learn to share it and coexist. VIVA LA PAZ!!!

    2. If you're all for peace then join me in moving this hateful monument. Why does the Brownsville Historical Association want to give a vehicle for racism and neo-confederate ideologies? I'm shocked that the museum is so supportive of a group that supports secession. This group wants to bring us back in time to their idealized version of a past where rich white men subjugated and oppressed women and minorities. I can't believe the museum supports this racist reinterpretation of history. I think the director of the museum should publicly denounce this. This has gotten out of hand, we cannot glorify racism in any form. The museum needs to change its stance on this now. This is 2016 not 1861, we're better than this.
