Joseph Cantu Not Impressed with Cameron County Commissioners Court Tabling LNG Tax Abatement

From the editor: Below is a comment from Joseph Cantu, valuable, not simply for its common sense, but also, because he claims experience in the petrochemical field, yet opposes the LNG plants for Cameron County:

I was there and I was not impressed. Why table this agenda item? Everyone of them sitting up there knows good and damn well why the place was full. The people, who will vote again, are saying we don't want them here much less give them tax abatements. What part of community consensus don't they understand? If Sofia Benavides truly represents precinct 1 then she should listen to the people from SPI and that portion of PI that is staunchly opposed. You have over 600 signature on a petition against, some 15-20 people that were to speak against and only 5 for LNG at this meeting and all they did was lay an egg and table it. These "elected" representatives of the people have been sitting in place too long. How easy to sit back and say yes to LNG for Brownsville and so what if it affects SPI, PI and LV. Being born and raised in Brownsville i find it disturbing to see. I was bitterly amused when Sepulveda said that if those 15-20 speaking against LNG are just going to repeat ideas then we're just going to ask for 3 or 4. I raised my hand to ask him that if the 5 for LNG are just going to repeat their ideas could we just allow 1 or 2 of them to speak. The dude is out of touch. Some of us have worked in the petrochem industry and many have at least wholeheartedly researched in depth the dirty business of LNG from exploration to export. If they had done any due diligence on the matter they would have stepped up Thursdays morning. I say next election cycle the eggs they laid this week should hatch.

  2. The commissioners are being paid by Annova to save the company $25,000,000. Simple as that.

  3. It is apparent the Cameron County Commissioners Court does NOT believe in LOCAL RULE - where the CITIZENS get to decide, through the officials they elected, what and how things will happen in their area of the country. The Commissioners now sitting are acting as if they are rulers over districts of people. That is NOT the government, nor the governance this Country has; that was definitively decided 239 years ago. Also decided back then, was the method to cure the problem. Next election, I know who will NOT be getting MY vote and who I will ACTIVELY oppose. Not only because of their dubious and all too transparent effort to hide their intended welfare to a wealthy corporation at the EXPENSE to The People, but, because they refuse to decisively act on the Will of The People. And, I'm spreading the word!

  4. Good luck! The voters that can be bought by chicken plates and persuaded by politiqueras far out number the 600 collected signatures. Not to mentioned the elected officials that already have cut deals .

  5. It saddens me that, because of the recent history of corruption in Cameron County, I now assume that a decision like the one to table the issue despite the strong showing against it at the meeting and in the months prior to the meeting is because somebody is getting paid. It is significant that they want to look into it further now. Shouldn't that have been done once they knew they were going to be voting on the matter? Logical can take you only two ways--- they were just to lazy to bother or their vote was already committed so it doesn't matter what the facts are. They just turned out to have badly misjudged the mood of the community despite the undeniable opposition at the various public meetings. What I believe they are rethinking is not whether LNG is good or bad for the county or whether or not people want it but how they can keep their corrupt commitments to the petrochemical industry without it becoming an election issue or (lesser concern) going to jail.

  6. The elected leaders of Laguna Vista, South Padre Island and Port Isabel all said the same thing. They made it quite clear from their comments that it did not matter what their personal feelings was toward the LNG projects. The MOST IMPORTANT component in their decision making process was what the PEOPLE had to say. After attending the County Court meeting it is quite obvious they choose to kick the public to the end of the line with regards to the role the public plays in the Commissioners Court decision making. I must admit I was quite disappointed that when the Commissioners spoke individually all they mentioned was hiring more financial consultants, having LNG representatives give more presentations about how great these projects are for the county. Never did any of them mention having a meeting with the public to find out what should be the MOST IMPORTANT component of their decision making process thinks. This blows my mind. How arrogant! I served in public office for many years and NEVER did I disrespect the people that I represented like this Commissioners Court has chosen to do. They have made up their mind to support these LNG projects no matter what anyone says. Sad day for Cameron County.

  8. How is it possible that the commissioners court has completely collapsed with the absence of Cascos. It just seems that they don't have a clue as to how to go forward. Feel sorry for Sepulveda, he just does not have the leadership requirements to run a court. The other commissioners are like lost sheep waiting for their herder to put them back on course, but who's going to do it. Sophie needs to step up and make some kind of proposal or express her opinion...she shitting in her pants...doesn't know what to do. She's drowning

  9. Of course they are being paid under the table! Haven't y'all seen Jessica Tetreau's little new home by the lake and that cute Tesla she just bought? I've heard that it's very hard to order a Tesla but oh wait, isn't one of the SpaceX big bosses owner of the Teslas co?

  10. The "unelected" County Judge was obviously surprised and confused by the public turnout against the LNG issues on the agenda. It was significant because County Commission meetings are scheduled in the mornings to disuade public participation. Sepulvada was dumbfounded (or at least looked dumbfounded) by this public effort and; while he tried to negate the public participation (changing the agenda items, delaying the commission issues), the public hung in. Not sure how many "Roberts Rules of Order" were violated by Sepulveda, but he was secretly screaming for assistance....against the public.Sepulveda is not a leader, he is just another Dumbokrat who is in this position because of his loyalty to the "Party"....the Party of corruption in Cameron County.
