Will Martinez' Opponents Unite Against Him in a Runoff to Save the City?

Aloof, Elistist, Arrogant King Tony the Last
Tony Martinez won the 2011 City of Brownsville mayoral race against 4 candidates, without a runoff, receiving over 54% of the vote.

One local pundit does not see history repeating itself:

"Not only will Martinez not get over 50% of the vote this time against 5 other candidates, the top two candidates will not get 50%."

Early in the campaign, Martinez exuded confidence with this bit of arrogant bravado to the Brownsville Herald:

"I don't really compete against other candidates. I compete with myself."

Yet, there is circumstantial evidence that Martinez' 2015 campaign is not being received with 2011 enthusiasm.  While Tony's initial 2011 send-off at the Lola's Bakery, Bates Cleaners, Spanky's Restaurant parking lots entertained over 500, the 2015 events have been sparsely populated.

Message, Audience, Presentation, Inc, the Austin advertising agency that suggests condescendingly that communication with Hispanic voters be kept "at a grade level that ensures the widest comprehension," has likely noticed the decline in popularity and has Tony reduced nearly to candidate level, attending campaign forums and begging for votes.

While Martinez is still regarded as the frontrunner, there are some rumbles from his rivals about banding together to defeat Martinez in the runoff.  As one operative in an opposing camp put it:

"Whoever is in the runoff with Martinez, the rest of us need to work together to defeat him for the good of the city."

We'll believe that when we see it.

  1. If the candidates truly care about this city, they will band together behind the candidate that is in the run-off against Tony, which most likely will be Pat. Lets see if these candidates can prove to us that their city comes first.

  2. Tony has the money to "reimburse" the other candidates for their campaign expenditures in exchange for their runoff support. This is where the rats start working in unison.

  7. We can only hope there is a runoff. Only then will the mismanagement of Tony Martinez become an issue of debate. Tony is in denial about his mismanagement and wants to fool the public into believing in the future...which is really the unknown. The future under Tony means more taxes and more mismanagement.
