Tony Martinez or Pat Ahumada for Mayor? Pick Your Poison!

Tony Martinez
In April 2011 Tony Martinez told the small crowd, gathered at UTB's Gran Salon for a candidate forum, that the "top priority" of his administration would be to create a new ethics code.  The City of Brownsville's former ethic's code expired in 2006.

The purpose of such a code, enforced by penalties, is to prevent elected officials from actions that, while technically legal, represent a conflict of interest, give them or their friends an unfair advantage, allowing them to profit from their elected office.   After nearly four years in office, Martinez has not only failed to fulfill his promise of writing a new ethics code, but his administration has been anything but ethical.

Attorney Horacio Barrera
In 2012 Martinez pushed through the City Commission the purchase of La Casa del Nylon, a property on the market for 10 years, for triple its market value at $2,300,000.  The seller was Martinez' personal friend, Abraham Galonsky, the final purchase price negotiated by Martinez' law partner, Horacio Barrera. Solicited for legal work on the sale was Diane Dillard, the wife of U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen, meaning at least three conflicts of interest on one transaction.
Martinez' $2.3 Million Boondoggle,
Broken Windows Boarded Up
Showing total disdain for the taxpayers and voters who put him in office, Martinez, to this day, has never offered one word in explanation as to why the city needed Casa del Nylon or the other 12 downtown buildings included in a $3.5 million Certificate of Obligation put on the backs of the taxpayers for the next 20 years.  The building, like 11 other buildings, sits idle after 3 years, off the tax roles, serving no purpose.

Also illustrative of Martinez' approach was in unethically tapping into the $3,060,000 AEP Texas refund for pet projects before stopped by the City Commission.

Tony has been footloose and fancy free with taxpayer assets, treating them as if they were his own.  At various points, he's offered City Plaza to UTB, office space to Filemon Vela and Lincoln Park to the UT system.  His sworn oath as mayor was to protect and secure taxpayer assets, not squander them.

Arrogance, back door deals with friends, ignoring the taxpayers while squandering their assets mark his administration.

Pat Ahumada
Noteworthy about Pat Ahumada's tenure as mayor is his difficulty in building a consensus. Pat brought forward ideas, not necessarily of his own origin, that had some validity.  The weir project, also a plan for El Jardin Hotel including financing, come to mind.

Pat himself would tell you that the City Commission opposed those concepts because they came from him. What does that tell you about his Dale Carnegie type skills, How to Make Friends and Influence People? Ideas can't be bullied through the City Commission.

How does a commissioner respond when the mayor publicly describes himself as "the quarterback" and the "City Commission" as "blocking linemen?" (Of course Tony Martinez circumvented the need for building consensus by buying commissioners, financing their campaigns.)

As for the character issues, Ahumada will simply say "show me the convictions."  Yes, it's conceivable he was trailed after drinking at local bars, set up at the border on a motorcycle without insurance and inspection, but the depositing of the check is worrisome.  Who of us does not know our bank balance at any given time?  Would you want someone serving as mayor who DID NOT instantly realize his account had $26,000 more than it should even as he left for a trip to Tampico?  This continues to be a character issue despite the acquittal.

  2. Jim in all fairness,
    1. One does not or may not check his account every day, i know i dont.
    2. He was ACQUITTED of all charges by a jury.
    3. He was in office 8 years and unlike Villalobos, Cantu, Limas, and alot of others before him he was never and has never been indicted on anything besides that check which he ended up being acquitted.
Instead of focusing on his mistakes why dont you give him credit for everything he did while in office . He has a record of getting things done even when the comission never worked with him.
Martinez may not have deposited a 20 thousand dollar check and been acquitted but what hes done with Lincoln Park and his shady deals with Galonsky, in my opinion, are worse and much more disturbing or as you would say "worrisome " than anything Pat ever did. If Martinez is ever indicted he most likely will NOT be acquitted unless youre sitting on the bench.
Stop criticizing Pat and instead focus on getting Martinez outta there!

  4. You try to define Pat Ahumada based on headlines and those who have always wanted him to fail, because they fear Pat, as he cannot be bought. You attack him on the check, but he was found innocent and he did not fill out the deposit slip, the teller did. No money was stolen and you harp on a mistake that did not rise to the level of prosecution, which means you are doing special interest bidding to make sure Pat does not win as you did before and look what you got as a result. You got a mayor who has not committed honest mistakes, but has stolen from taxpayers millions through his personal agenda and that of his compadres. You are no different than them, as you say you are against them, but you blast the only person who has stood up to them.
You say Pat has done nothing, but obviously you do not know the things he has done to make Brownsville a better city. Compare Pat’s record to Eddie Trevino, Tony Martinez, and William Garza and the three put together do not come close to Pat’s contribution to getting things done for Brownsville. What can you point to that Pat did that was against the overall interest of our citizens and that he benefitted. You might disagree on an issue, but the city is not about a single issue and Pat is the best mayor we have had. The blogs elected Tony, because it was doing special interest bidding to get rid of Pat and look what you got, four wasted years and a fleecing of taxpayers resources. Thank you!

  5. You can tell that this city is swirling down the toilet when the only people we can get to run for Mayor are such scoundrels. None really care about or consider the views of the public. How sad for Brownsville.

  6. Scoundrels? Doesnt care about Brownsville? You think you know Pat Ahumada, but you don’t. Ask yourself what it is that causes you to constantly find fault and attack him? It is not his record, because if you knew his record you would not keep harping on those things you attack him on.
Pat Ahumada has constantly stood up for those things you keep saying you want in a mayor. Pat has always stood up for the people of Brownsville, even under very difficult circumstances. Pat has always try to do what is right for Brownsville. Pat has introduced and passed initiatives you attack him on.
You say you want transparency and accountability, but you attack him for standing up on those principals against special interest. Do you think anyone else has the courage to say no to special interest? Do you think William does? William is controlled by the Indians and is not a leader. William is weak and did what this mayor was trying to do with Lincoln Park when he wanted to cram the Event Center location at Amigo Land when citizens wanted it built in the north part of Brownsville. It was Pat who stood up to William (Three Amigos) and forced the issue to a referendum. Please educate yourself before beginning to criticize judge and point fingers.

  8. The mayor has only ONE VOTE and most of the time should be the tie breaker vote. If these individuals (Ahumada, Martinez, or whoever else runs for the position) have the "power" or think they are untouchable it is because the city comissioners and the general public have made them believe they have that power. THEY DONT or at least they should not. Once, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNG time ago, this town was THE TOWN of the RGV. Where are those people that made that happen?
