Alex Torres Making Himself Available As An Alternative to the Aged Cameron County Republican Party Chairman Frank Morris

Alex Torres
Alex Torres of Harlingen, the Republican Party's sacrificial lamb served up to Eddie Lucio III in the 2012 District 38 House of Representatives race, has positioned himself as a potential successor to the 80 year old Frank Morris as Cameron County Republican Party Chairman.

Frank Morris, 80, the party chairman for three decades, resigned the post May 14, 2014 @ 12:36 PM.  In a terse resignation note to party secretary Ida Stacy, Morris stated that he would not be attending the state party convention, had closed out all vendors, removing his name from the checking account.  He gave the "new chairman 30 days to pick up the materials and files for the county."

The 30 days Morris allowed to transition the local party into new leadership have passed with Morris still acting as the de facto County Chair.  Party members seem divided on the legality of Morris' continued control with some taking the position that he only resigned his "previous" term, not the current one.  Others are set to make a legal challenge of that position.

The local party has, not only managerial differences, but ideological ones as well, with the Cameron County Young Republican's Club expressing their non-support of the state Republican platform.

Frank Morris
Meanwhile, Torres, we're told, has been calling state level campaigns, letting them know of his availability to assist, a call that might be made ordinarily by a county chair.  Several influential families within the county party may favorably view Torres potential.

The patriarch of one of those families, Frank Bogus of Harlingen, met with Morris to discuss the future of the local party.

  2. Get the Anglos out of the Republican Party here......they are too far to the right and cause Hispanics who are conservative from becoming active Republicans. We need a Republican Party that can be lead by Hispanics in order to get local Hispanic Republicans to come out of the closet. Frank Morris kept the Republican Party in play, but really never had a winner unless a Hispanic was fed up with the corruption of the Democrats.

  4. Only in the RGV would you find a car dealership named Bogus. That is because 95% of the people in the RGV do not know what the word means. Only slightly more know what the word Republican means. However, is you are rotunda and your name is Torres you have a fighting chance.

    3. To the comment at 5:49, please see link below with facts about the level of education in Cameron County. Right at 43% illiteracy, which means these people cannot even read the Brownsville Herald written at a 3rd grade level. Call it racist if you wish, but the locals are responsible for this state of affairs. No gringos are exploiting the educational system of Brownsville. On the contrary, it is a totally failed system, as the statistics show, that is solely used for local patronage. Over 500 million dollars spent by the BSD and these are the results you get:

The real racist are the local people who cannot educate their own. Do yourself a favor and check out the real dropout rate for BISD instead of calling others racist. By the way, statistically ALL large groups have the same distribution of intelligence. It is their ENVIRONMENT that is the problem.

  5. Alex would make a competent county chair if only given a chance. He has paid his dues to the party without compromising his principles.

OMG! What kind of bullshit is this, and exactly what principles would/should be compromised in order to pay ones dues? This was pure political null speech. Elegant sounding without a shred of meaning. That tags it to one of Alex's people.

  7. Jim, are you unaware of the American political climate or purposely trying to blow something out of proportion to get a debate going? Ideological differences are not unique to the local party, the entire Republican party is experiencing this shift in paradigm. But what it falls down to locally is a couple of firebrands in a pissing contest with some old man and a green young Republican who just entered the scene. One has to wonder what their fixation on her is all about considering she has only been around a few months that I have seen.

  9. Anonymous 1:36 wants to minimize this fight for the soul of the Republican Party into minor pissing match, but there must be more to this story. Why would the Young Republicans go against their platform? Who makes up the leadership of this group to take them in such an antagonizing path? Does Alex Torres who looks like a Youngish Republican support or disavows those dividers?

  10. Alex slipped in late to the Cascos event and was quietly making the rounds with the area field rep at his elbow. I didn't have much of a chance to more than say hi, but that guy was pretty full of confidence as he worked his way around.

  14. The reason this is happening is that there are desperate members of the party on the outside looking in like a bunch of mangy, vicious dogs who were turned out of the house for a good reason: they bite and froth at the mouth with no cause or reason or good social temperment. One of the most vocal of these wild pack animals turns on his own friends with abandon, and the leader of the pack for all his intelligence he boasts can not even groom himself. Republicans have to spend more time fighting other Republicans instead of focusing on winning races and running candidates and growth. They don't even have time to fight Democrats. The comments on these blog posts are proof that there are some mighty unstable and savage creatures that suffer not only from the effects of their own malice, but cowardice and avarice and a hatred of anybody who can succeed where they themselves have either failed or never had the sense to try to prosper. It is a shame that they have a platform from which to lie and poison the water drunk by all in the efforts to harm a few.
