  1. The U.S. Border Patrol has shifted more than 100 agents from California and Arizona to the Valley, its busiest sector for illegal immigration.
The agency announced Wednesday that the temporarily assigned agents had arrived to the Rio Grande Valley this week.
While arrests of immigrants entering the country illegally have stabilized or fallen at other parts of the Southwest border, they've soared in South Texas. Last year, the Border Patrol made more than 154,000 arrests in the sector, an increase of 58 percent from the previous year.
The sector has already made more than 95,000 arrests midway through this fiscal year and seized more than 300,000 pounds of marijuana. The agents from Arizona and California join those already sent from the neighboring Laredo sector.

FORT HOOD, Texas - The U.S. Army has identified the soldier responsible in Wednesday's shooting as 34-year-old Ivan Lopez. Base Commanding General Mark Milley said Lopez had been stationed at the base for the last four months and was assigned to the motor pool, where he worked as a mechanic on tanks and other field vehicles.

Lopez, who shot himself when confronted by a base MP, reportedly shot and killed three fellow soldiers and wounded a dozen others. No motive for the shooting has been given.

According to the Army, Lopez is from San Benito, Texas - a small farmworker community in South Texas along the Mexican border. A short bio provided by base officials listed him as a veteran of the Afghanistan war with no commendations.

Lopez graduated from San Benito High School and attended Texas Southmost College before enlisting the the military. In high school he was a standout tight end on the football team. The Army said he was married and the father of four children.

    2. The BH writes the following:

The Puerto Rican native had two deployments, one as a truck driver in Iraq from August to December 2011, McHugh said. He enlisted in the Army in June 2008 as an infantryman before switching his specialty to truck driver. He had previously served in the Puerto Rico National Guard for nine years.

  4. Jim,
I don't know why some of your readers don't pay attention to where they comment on your blog.
What does the Border Patrol and Ft. Hood comments have to do with The National Guard Armory purchase by Mayor Tony Martinez? Do what Bobby does - just don't publish anything submitted unless they agree with your article.
