From the editor: I'd just started perusing the 71 page Public Information Request received from the City of Brownsville with the appraisal of La Casa del Nylon, a building the city purchased from Abraham Galonsky for $2,300,000.
Assistant City Attorney John Chosy prepared the documents sent to me via City Secretary Estela Von Hatten. I've been told that another lawyer, Horacio Barrera, Mayor Tony Martinez' law partner "negotiated" the sale for the city, but that also Attorney Diane Dillard, the wife of Judge Andrew S. Hanen, may have assisted in dotting all of the i's and crossing the real estate t's in the City Commission's buying spree of at least 11 downtown properties in the last year or so.
Just past the cover page, evidently prepared by Rapid Appraisal Services of San Benito, Texas is the current license of appraiser Lauro Leal, described as a State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser. The problem is that, according to the document contained in the 71 page report, Leal's license expired August 31, 2011.
As many as three lawyers have been paid to analyze and prepare these documents; Barrera, Dillard and Chosy.
Is it possible that La Casa del Nylon was appraised by an unlicensed appraiser?

Lauro Leal is currently licensed appraiser in the State of Texas. That is an old license you are looking at. The property was either appraised prior to the expiration date of the license or the older license was accidently put in the report instead of the newer one.

ReplyDeleteYou are looking at an older license. The effective date of the report is either prior to the expiration date or the updated license was accidently left out. I can probably get you his updated license.
ReplyDeleteExpired or not, the guy's license should be suspended forever because he obviously does not know how to appraise a building approriately. I smell a kickback.
ReplyDeleteEditor, Please note the effective date of the appraisal
ReplyDeleteBonehead move, Jim. Didn't you see the 2011 expiration date? Big clue!
ReplyDeleteThere’s no question that part of the tea party movement — part of the backlash against President Obama — does have a racial component. But having said that, it doesn’t mean that all tea party members are motivated by racial animosity, or even that most tea party members are. As with many people who don’t belong to the tea party, many tea party members do hold this idea of blacks and browns being lazy and irresponsible.
ReplyDeleteI'm what you would consider "brown" and a member of the Tea Party since its conception and not ONCE NEVER EVER have felt discriminated. In fact, I have been a VP for the local organization and the current President is a LATINA, I guess according to your standards what you call "brown" people. You see the difference between you and us-TEA PARTY we see people as people, we don't see color, The Liberal Left ALWAYS SEE COLOR FIRST. In my book that's what you call a true RACIST.
DeleteWhen you look at what animates the tea party, there are several different hatreds that are core to the tea party. They hate welfare. Especially, or particularly welfare that’s understood as going to minorities. Not social security, for instance, but rather food stamps. Next, they’re obsessed about Muslims and Islam. And they really see this sort of threatening, this external threat in the form of the Middle East, but also ostensibly an internal threat of Muslims coming into the United States … They’re deeply concerned about undocumented immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants from Mexico. Finally, they hate President Obama. And Obama seems to combine both this sense of welfare, of being a Muslim, of being a brown foreign other, right?
