Entertainment district? They forgot one important ingredient, people. Unless you want to entertain yourself as you watch the negative cash flow grow each week. As I look over the venture capital landscape of downtown Brownsville, I see two possible sources of economic growth, check cashing and payday loans. The ropa usada business plan has now reached the mature stage of growth and is no longer capable of expansion. Of course, once the plans of our visionary mayor kick in, we will have the equivalent of Austin's 6th with UT-Valley Transit in full swing. My back of the envelope calculations suggest that this will take at least 8 light years. However, in the meantime we can attract tourist who wish to experience the real, live (as in bullets) version of the classic, cult film, "El Mariache", by strolling across the Gateway Bridge into that picturesque hell hole, Matamoros. Valet parking available.
ReplyDeleteBora Bora, Kai, Pure and Barrock were all owned by the same person. He was caught by the TABC for selling after hours and also buying liquor from UETA and reselling, which is illegal. He pocketed all the money and never paid his bills. And if you did not tip at these establihments, they would give you a free mystery shot, which was all the spillage from mixing drinks. He also thought he owned the streets and charged people for parking around market square. Deja Vu had five partners, way to many hands in the cash register, and never paid their bills also. They had a nice place and good crowds, but it seems they lacked any business acumen which got them in deep financial debt with creditors. Because their business falied, they took out their frustration on the landlords property by punching holes in walls and doors, robbing fixtures and really messing the place up. I think Brownsville's Entertainment District needs some nightclub owners that have experience and a track record of operating successful businesses if it is ever going to flourish.

ReplyDeleteStill no reason to go downtown......that's why these "joints" can't make it.
ReplyDeleteThe downtown clubs with integrity are still open and putting out fine original music. I love the Half Moon, Haven and El Hueso del Fraile. Great music and great ambience. The fly by nighters have flown and good riddance. There are lots of good reasons to go downtown. Who wants to hang out in a strip mall in a cow pasture? Boring people with no vision or imagination. You might as well be in Kansas if you stay in the suburbs.
ReplyDeleteBarcelona Nights was a great place for live Jazz, I think they were a little ahead of the time, but had a great vision for downtown. It would be nice to bring Barcelona Nights back, loved their pizza!!!
ReplyDeleteBottom line the entertainment district was never market driven. I suspect no market research was ever done to see if it was feasible, much less viable.
ReplyDeletei was told today that the problem, or a problem, was the Brownsville pd hassling the patrons of these bars as they left at 2:00 am. A bar tender told me that he had been pulled over three times.
