GuideStar Invalidates United Brownsville's Fiscal 2013 Financial Report

From the editor:  GuideStar, itself a nonprofit, provides accurate financials for other nonprofits.  It's not a watchdog group so much as an information tool. Here is the way GuideStar describes itself:  

• Gathering data from nonprofits through the GuideStar Exchange, which gathers financial statements, board and staff data, and annual reports to share with donors and funders;
• Hosting that information so that it's available free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; and
• Providing GuideStar reports and tools to donors, advisors, and foundation grantmakers to connect them with the nonprofits.

 The report below details the financials for United Brownsville for fiscal year 2012(October 2, 2011~September 30, 2012).  Notice United Brownsville claims receipts for the fiscal year of $200,000(That's consistent with the 8 Cameron County entities that each contribute $25,000). The report lists expenses of $155,120 which would leave an obvious balance of $44,880.  

The problem is in last month's(October 23) meeting of United Brownsville/City Commission, Financial Officer Pete Gonzalez gave a financial report inconsistent with GuideStar's information.  Gonzalez very succinctly gave this financial report for fiscal 2013:  "$200,000

received, $200,000 spent."  The report was quickly and unanimously approved by United Brownsville.  There was no mention of a balance of $44,880 brought forward from the preceding fiscal year.  

This is not a criticism of Pete Gonzalez.  Anyone who has witnessed his carefully prepared and delivered reports before the Brownsville City Commission understands what a stickler for details Gonzalez is.  It is likely he never even examined United Brownsville's financials.  

United Brownsville is an unelected, unaccountable, shadowy board paid for by Brownsville taxpayers.  City Attorney Mark Sossi, a member of the United Brownsville Coordinating Board states that the  the elitist board is not subject to the Open Records Act.
