Rene Oliveira Mailout~Putting A Million Dollar Spin On A Ten Cent Legislative Career

Has Oliveira Been Riding Too Long?
A Rene Oliveira mailout was sent out this week to residents of Brownsville, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, South Padre Island, Rio Hondo, Laguna Vista and Bayview as he seeks re-election in 2014.  Oliveira has been representing District 37(Cameron County) for 29 years, which, interestingly, is the average age of those living in the district.

In the mailout, Oliveira takes credit for a "new university and medical school, attracting new jobs and restoring cuts to education(Did he mean restoring the monies that had been cut?).  He also mentions his efforts to bring the "future of space exploration to Cameron County" by attracting Elon Musk's SpaceX.

SpaceX alone, Oliveira's mailout asserts, will bring Cameron County 600 jobs, plus 400 indirect jobs as well as $80 million in capital investment.  Oliveira asserts that a bill he sponsored, House Bill 2623, prohibits SpaceX from closing Boca Chica beach Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day and the weekend before Memorial Day.  In contrast to Oliveira's hype about SpaceX's job creation(he used the numbers spit out by snake oil salesmen Jason Hilts and Gilbert Salinas of the Brownsville Economic Development Corporation) SpaceX  CEO Elon Musk in a report to the FAA stated that the Boca Chica site would need only 30 fulltime employees.

Rene Oliveira's salary as a "Representative" of District 37 is said to be $7,200. He is also retained by the Brownsville Independent School District as interim counsel. But it is his work for Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson, LLP that gives his employer the most bang for the buck.

First, a little historical perspective: In 2001 Oliveira spearheaded a committee to remove a line in section 3308 of the tax code limiting the delinquent tax collection fee to 15%, subsequently including language allowing a tax collection fee rate of 20%. That bill sailed through the Ways & Means Committee of which Rene was chairman and was passed by the entire house. Considering Linebarger's near statewide presence in tax collection, how many millions of dollars did this sleight of hand add to the agency's coffers?

Now, fast forward to 2012. With Rene Oliveira retained by BISD as interim counsel, but still connected to Linebarger, the February 2, 2012 board meeting agenda contains an action item INCREASING the tax collection rate by 2.5%, netting the collection firm an extra $125,000. And who is that newly named firm? Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson LLP. (Please note: As documented by Bobby Wightman-Cervantes, Linebarger was a substantial contributor to the campaigns of BISD board members Longoria, Escobedo and Saavedra.) Who pays this extra fee and the millions of dollars collected since 2001 by the passage Rene Oliveira's house bill? The tax payers, the very people Representative Rene Oliveira claims to represent.

  1. Hmmmmm - something smells pretty "fishy" with this scenario. Is Linebarger firm a big contributor to Renecito's campaigns? If not in $$$, I sure bet "in kind."

  5. Rene is scumbag politician. He takes credit for everything, but has really done little for the region other than use his influence and sell his vote to outside interests or lobbyists. He used his influence and that of City Commissioner Melissa Zamora to "avoid" (run from) a DUI and reckless driving charge on Frontage Road....and is regularly seen drinking with "ladies" around town. Other than that, or a parade, we don't see much of Rene. What legislation has he introduced that has benefitted us.....nada. He is just a legislative leech who jumps in and puts his name on things generated by events....usually initiatives outside the legislature.

  6. The only representative worse than Rene is Eddie Lucio III (The Turd) who represents Brownsville north of HWY 802. What has he done for any of his voters lately....other than take up space in Austin???? "The Turd" and his father have sold their souls and their votes to out of area special interests and lobbyists. They take care of themselves first and, like Rene, claim to be responsible to whatever crums are dropped in the RGV. They grin like "shit eating dogs" in public, but don't seem to understand they leave a bad smell where they go.

  7. Heard that Rene Oliveira is now representing Catalina Presas-Garcia in a law suit against her for stealing money during a real estate deal she was handling. Heard she stole $8,000.00 by using it as her own private stash. She then went around town begging for money from family, friends and vendors to put the money back in the real estate deal gone wrong. Very Bad! Now isn't it a conflict of interest that Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson LLP pay Rene Oliveira to represent Catalina Presas-Garcia, after she voted to give them the BISD Tax Collection contract for 3 years? Look at the posted agenda for the October 1st meeting. It clearly states that the current tax collection law firm be extended for three years. Do you not think it was Catalina Presas-Garcia pulling strings with her fellow board members to vote yes on the contract for Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson LLP. After all did their firm not recently wine and dine several of those board members to ensure the vote in their favor? This does not pass the smell test!!!
