Cameron County Democratic Party Rejects Carlos Masso as Chairperson in Shocking Vote!

Carlos Masso
Carlos Masso must feel incredibly snakebit.  To quote Bob Dylan and Blind Lemon Jefferson before him:  "If it wasn't for bad luck, he'd have no luck at all."
You see, Masso was standing next to outgoing county chairperson Sylvia Garza-Perez at this Friday's Cameron County Democratic Party meeting with anointing oil at the ready.  So confident was Masso that he'd be named Cameron County Democratic Chair that he didn't bother to summon his supporters for the meeting.

In a clandestine, sneaky meeting held September 7, 2013, with a reported 20 in attendance including prospective candidates at El Mercadito, two rooms on the ground floor of the old Majestic Theater owned by realtor and Democratic Party power broker Larry Jokl, Masso had been named county chairperson.  That decision didn't hold as the wife of former Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, Cynthia Hinojosa screamed foul, citing party rule violations.

Amber Medina
The make-good meeting held October 11, 2013 in the same meeting rooms was somewhat better attended.  Out of 109 Cameron County Precincts, 37 were there to cast votes with Masso garnering 18 of those.  Unfortunately for Masso, the relatively unknown Amber Medina, 35, from McAlester, Oklahoma, received 19 votes and was installed as Cameron County Democratic Chairperson.  Mayor Tony Martinez, sitting next to outgoing Chairperson Sylvia Garza-Perez, visibly annoyed at the selection, did not join in the applause following the announced results and promptly left the room.

Several party operatives, still in disbelief after the vote, expressed the view that the local party had
Sylvia Garza-Perez, Amber Medina
been blindsided by former County Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa and his wife Cynthia.  "This woman(Amber Medina) has never even attended our meetings.  Now we're in for the same old, same old Hinojosa control," stated a depressed, but angry, party operative.

Sylvia Garza-Perez, overseeing her last county Democratic meeting, admonished those in attendance:  "Now, we expect all of you to be at every party meeting from now on," a subtle jab at those who showed up only to support the Hinojosa candidate for chairperson.   Garza-Perez announced that subsequent party meetings would be held at the same location one Saturday a month at 10:00 AM.

For Masso it was another second place finish. In July 2012 Masso lost the District Attorney race in the Democratic Primary to Luis Saenz by a mere 351 votes, despite his alleged heavy reliance on politiqueras to solicit votes.  Stoically, Masso was reported to have given a last minute monetary assist to the reported financially strapped campaign of Erin H. Garcia for Justice of the Peace, Place 2-2.    Erin H. Garcia's father Ernie Hernandez attempted to repay Masso by creating another JP position for him following the election but that idea was shot down.  Now, Masso loses out on the county chairmanship after appearing to be the frontfunner backed by the Ernie Hernandez-Tony Martinez-Sylvia Garza-Perez forces.

As Sylvia Garza-Perez and her husband ushered us out of the meeting rooms, we were told that the county Democratic Party is behind one month on the $375 rent for the facilities.  "My husband and I were paying the rent and the utilities," stated Garza-Perez, as she locked the door.

Amber Medina from McAlester, Oklahoma has her work cut out for her:  Catching up on the back rent, generating participation from 109 precinct chairs and winning over Mayor Tony Martinez.

  1. the vote was 13 to 12 and of medina's voters only 3 had ever attended any party meetings since being elected, about 9 of masso's were regular attendees ---now to all Sylvia's critics out there, you now have a chair who has never attended a Democratic Party meeting, works for Juan Magallanes, and his basically Gilberto in a dress ----well done morons

  7. Finally gettingt rid of these tyrants. Slowly but surely,Sylvia Garza Perez, Ernie Hernandez, and Erin G. Hernandez will be a thing of the pass. Kudos to every single person that had the courage to dismantle the Garza Perez-Hernandez corruption cell. Now I am starting to feel proud of being a Democrat. The people above mention will not win the upcoming elections.

    1. You're a stupid ignorant asshole. Gilbert is a crook and that new unknown Democratic chair is Gilbert's puppet and uses his wife as an informant to do his dirty work at these meetings. It's the same dictatorial reign they practiced when they were in charge. They don't care about democracy unless it serves them personally. Get it? Get a life, loser.

  14. Where do you all get your information. The writer of this article is so misinformed that he should have someone edit his work before he puts out to for people to read. There may have been 38 people in attendance, but not all were there to cast a vote but because we do care about the Democratic Party in Cameron County. I don't know what "dots" you are connecting but Amber is a resident of Brownsville and is a registered voter in Cameron County, pays her taxes and therefore is eligible to serve as Cameron County Democratic Chairperson. Masso may be from Brownsville, but I know more about Amber Medina than I do about Carlos Masso and I have lived in Cameron County (Brownsville-Harlingen) all my life. Just to set the record straight, she doesn't work for Magallanes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh by the way, if Sylvia and her husband were paying the rent from the Cameron County Democratic Party funds not from their own pockets. Furthermore, Mr. Mean Misinformation, if the CCDP is behind on the rent that goes to show that our former Chairperson, Sylvia Garza-Perez, former appointed Vice Chair Carlos Masso, and former Treasurer, Jeff Duvall were not keeping up with the financial responsibility they were elected to do. You are right, to have left Masso in as CCDC would have been more of the same.

You have some difficulty with reading comprension. I did not state the source of funds used to pay rent on the office space but simply quoted the outgoing chairperson. Also, I said nothing personally about Masso, simply quoted an attendee.

  17. Some of us arrived way before this meeting began, therefore we were able to eyewitness the developments of such. At the beginning Tony Martinez tried to intervene, but was promptly rejected, then the discussion centered in whether he was able to vote (for Masso) as Precint 38 Chair, it was determined that he could not; this did not set very well with Garza-Perez, as it also came to light that many Precint Chairs do not live where they perhaps once did, and many were NOT elected, but rather "appointed"

They can't win elections unless they hire politiqueras to stuff the ballot boxes or call secret meetings with only a few select insiders invited to vote.
