Rosie Sheldon-Sotelo Mentions Upgrades Needed in the District Clerk Office at Campaign Kick-Off

With her pending retirement as Cameron County District Clerk, Aurora De La Garza will do more for the county's judicial and court system than in her long-tenured service.  De La Garza, closely associated with the convicted former Judge Abel Limas, but not yet indicted in the ever-enlarging county judicial scandal, is viewed by many as having steered cases to specific courts for "considerations."

Rosie Sheldon-Sotelo, a 28 year employee of the Cameron County Court, did not publicly criticize the outgoing District Clerk at her campaign kick-off for Cameron County District Clerk Thursday at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, but she did hint at changes in approach to the position, if elected.

"In other Texas counties, lawyers and the public can view court documents on the internet, download and print them if needed.  We do not have that capability in Cameron County.  Providing access to such information online would be a priority for me, if elected.  A lawyer told me recently that he went to the clerk's office to get information on a case, only to be told that the case was pending and the information was not available. In my office we would send someone to pick up and deliver that document if necessary," stated Sheldon-Sotelo.

Sheldon-Sotelo also stated that, if elected, she would have her office "audited quarterly" by the Cameron County Auditor to ensure that fees and documents were being handled appropriately.  "I'm pro-active on that," she stated.
