Is Downtown Brownsville Sinking Before It Can Swim?

The development of the Entertainment District downtown has been agonizingly slow with a dozen or so clubs endeavoring to clear all the hurdles to open in the last 24 months.  Now, a couple of the newly opened clubs are facing eviction notices for non-payment of rent and utilities, the Kai Lounge and the Club Bora Bora.

    Looks more like the Interment District to me. I would suggest the club owners get together a fund to hire a New Orleans Voodoo Priestess to come down to the Interment District and remove the "mal ojo" that has plagued this poor town for centuries. XXX

    problem is that all of the investment so far has come from the private sector and not the city. When individuals are starting up clubs, they are usually down to their last dollars by the time the club/bar opens. And the landlords arent in the business of letting someone run a club in their building for free. Especially considering the damages and liability a club can bring.

      The problem is not the lack of tax dollars to boost this poor plan Entertainment District downtown, it's just not MARKET DRIVEN. Since b HUSSEIN obammie and liberal communist democRATS have been in control, jobs and business activity has taken a nose dive, without leisure dollars these clubs will continue to fail as they have already started to do.

    The club business can be a risky business but can also be very profitable if managed properly. The problem with the Kai Bar, Pure Lounge and BarRock is that they are owned by the same owner who historically has been very irresponsible. When you are late making payments on your lease or don't pay your overdue light bill and disregard the liquor laws you are bound to get into trouble. These types of business can make you money fast but you can go under much faster. There is very little customer loyalty in the club business and on average a club like these is good for about 2 years if you are lucky. Club owners know this so when the novelty wears off most young clients will leave you for the next new one. While a no cover charge with one dollar beer and two dollar margaritas on ladies night sounds enticing, it can get old and boring pretty fast. So the end result is to make the money as fast as you can, shut it down and move on somewhere else.

    The only way to make profits in a bar business is if you own the property. Renting is not a good deal. You're working for the landlord.
