"God Damn You, Tony Martinez!" Tony Plans to Give(Lease) City Plaza to the University of Texas

"I believe in Brownsville" Yeah, right!
Tony Martinez is the ultimate bootlicker.  Like the boys of Matamoros who used to carry around their wooden shine kits, he will polish the boots of a rich man for a nickel.  After the first buff, he will slide his tongue across the boot and slap his rag on it to a brilliant spit shine.

As mayor he once pledged to protect the assets of one of this country's poorest communities.  Instead, he offers them up as if they were his own to anyone with influence, prestige and prominence.

He has never cared one whit about Brownsville.  It is a dirty city compared to his native Harlingen.  He uses what few assets Brownsville has to promote Tony.  Do you remember when he tried to "lease" a substantial part of City Plaza to newly elected Congressman Filemon Vela for $1.00 per year?  Public outrage fueled by the bloggers exposed that deal and the City Commission courageously adjusted the going rate of leasing city property to market value.  Wealthy Vela said "thanks, but no thanks" and utilized his own office space for his congressional substation.

Brownsville's City Plaza
Now, we learn that Martinez wants to convey Brownsville's City Plaza to the University of Texas and send city officials currently occupying the building to the dusty, unairconditioned Casa del Nylon on Adams Street.  Juan Montoya of El Rrun Rrun just broke this story and I confirmed it with a City Commissioner.  Mayor Tony, without citizen or commissioner involvement has been working, planning this behind the scenes.  Ramiro Garza from the planning department has been giving UTB official tours of City Plaza for two weeks.  Tony continues his autocratic rulership of Brownsville.  He is simply a traitor.

As reported in Mean Mister Brownsville February 3, 2013:

"The University of Texas is an extremely wealthy university by any measure despite what their fundraising appeal literature implies. The Permanent University Fund or P.U.F., which includes the oil and mineral rights generated on over 2,000,000 acres of Texas land came in at 8.8 billion in 2008 and is now certainly higher, yet that is only 8% of UT's total funding.

During the entire UTB/TSC relationship, UT acted as if their hands were tied with respect to financial support for that combined institution, citing a rule that P.U.F. funds were only available for pure UT branches, not those affiliated with another entity, like TSC.(No mention was ever made that UT easily had enough funds to alleviate some of the burden of one of the poorest cities in the United States.) So Brownsville, as always, was allowed to suck it up and assume the tremendous financial burden of perhaps as much as 1 billion dollars by 2034 to pay for the infamous Juliet Garcia's extravagant ways. Please don't forget that when Garcia's request for a 105 million dollar bond issue was rejected by the taxpayers in favor of a more modest 65 million, she went ahead and spent 105 million anyway. Yes, arrogance beyond belief!"

This comment from the same article seems to be apropos now:

Addendum: Do we see a pattern with Tony? He contributes mightily to the 2008 Obama campaign, hoping for at least an ambassadorship. He initially offers Filemon Vela free office space in City Plaza, possibly hoping to curry favor with Vela. Now, he goes totally berserk, trying to prove his devotion to Juliet Garcia and UT. Tony is all about Tony. He does not care one wit about Brownsville. He is using his unfortunate election as mayor to try to further himself.

Martin Sarkis
As things stand now, Tony has two certain votes to strip the city of integral assets, Rose Gowen and Estela Chavez-Vasquez.  Jessica Tetreau will not stand for this.  Ricardo Longoria will not stand for this.  We hope John Villarreal will stand up to Tony on this.  On June 22 a new commissioner will be elected.  On June 25, that person will be installed as commissioner.  If the new electee is Deborah Portillo, Tony is home free to rape Brownsville.  If it is Martin Sarkis, we stand a fighting chance.

  3. UT Brownsville, the name for now, will have a massive drop in enrollment in the Fall. The enrollment will never recover from splitting with TSC, which was a natural feeder. No one, and I mean no one, from outside of Las Prietas on the NW to Southmost on the SW will be crazy enough to come to UTB or whatever the hell they come up with. By the way, the UT The Americas is already taken by a Mexican University in Puebla. UTB totally screwed themselves by joining the REAL UT system because this means that have to REAL students who are actually prepared for university work. Brownsville does not have the population to support a UT REAL system university because not only are the numbers too low but the quality of the pool is very poor. They will be lucky to have 3,000 students FTE in the Fall. And, their freshman class with be 80% remedial classes. There should be one and only one, campus for the UT Magic Valley, that should be in Edinburg. All Brownsville needs and can support is a decent junior college. But, keep up the farce until the big boys in Austin catch on to the local movida...

  8. CASA loses funding from Harlingen...hmmm I wonder why? Is the interim executive director incompetent? I think so! What business does Ofelia River having running a non-profit? None. Ask CDBG Harlingen why CASA wasn't funded. Inquiring minds want to know.
