Can Brownsville Afford to Wait for John Villarreal to Grow Into His Role As Commissioner?

John Villarreal
Legendary University of Texas coach Darrell Royal was noted for playing talented freshman on his football team.  "If a dog's gonna bite, he'll bite as a pup," he was once quoted.

Many of us hoped three years ago that John Villarreal, filling out the remainder of Edward Camarillo's term as commissioner in District 4, would learn to bite.

It was disappointing to say the least when John, in his first city commission meeting, so timidly relinquished one of the few bones thrown a commissioner's way, appointing someone from their district to an influential city board.  He allowed the bigger dog, Mayor Tony Martinez to snatch the appointment right out of his mouth without so much as a whimper.

We quickly learned John simply had no bite.  Again and again Martinez walked over him and the other youthful, naive commissioners, increasing the city's tax obligations, buying speculative real estate downtown to the tune of 3.5 million dollars, shutting down the broadcast of public comment.

Respect for one's elders is not necessarily a bad thing.  John still lives at home at 30, works hard under his father at La Milpa Tortilleria on St. Charles St., producing some of the best Sunday barbacoa in Brownsville.  John delivers tortillas around the city and to customers on South Padre Island.  I'm somewhat envious of good father-son relationships, something I didn't enjoy, leaving home at 16.

John's single burst of emotion was at Earthfest last summer.  He totally saw red when he noticed Mary Helen Flores passing out voting information from a booth.  He saw Flores, not as a citizen or as a constituent, but as a supporter of his opponent in the May 2010 runoffs, Tony Zavaleta.  He also knew of Mary Helen's tireless opposition to the election stealing practiced by Ernie, Norma and Erin Hernandez, John's closest family friends.  The uncharacteristic temper tantrum John threw that day, threatening even to defund  Earthfest for the coming year, shocked many.  The local blogs had a field day chastising John for his juvenile behavior.

Letty Perez-Garzoria
Retired nurse Letty Perez-Garzoria, John's opponent in the District 4 Commissioner race, approaches things very differently from John Villarreal.  Unlike John, Ms. Garzoria is not afraid to speak up as those who attend city commission and BISD board meetings can attest.  She is full of ideas to control spending and create revenue.  She frequently admonishes that the city "must live within its means."  Garzoria, in a respectful, mannerly way takes issue with the current one-man control of Brownsville by Mayor Tony Martinez.

  1. Never send a boy to do a man's job. I voted for john villarreal on the last election but he proved to be a pushover. His connection to the hernandez and the politiqueras was a real turnoff. I voting for maturity and dedication,my vote is for Letty Garzoria.

  2. Just because she is a retired teacher doesn't mean she can be any more effective than John Villareal at city policy making. The teachers at BISD take orders....so who will she be taking orders from??? Being older and retired from BISD doesn't a city policy maker make. We need youth in city government, not senior citizens who have no idea what progress is.

    1. You have a serious reading comprehension deficiency. The article plainly states that Garzoria is a retired nurse, not a retired teacher.

  3. Letty is the better choice for city commissioner because she is not controlled by anyone behind the scenes.

  4. I want Antonio Zavaletta back now. He is both an academic and knowledgeable about the local chusma. We need people like him.

  5. Retired NURSE. My, you have no retention! Re-read the article if necessary before posting your opinions!

You must be as green and wet behind the ears as the silly willy Villarreal.

    Go to the corner...daddy's order!

  6. We need an independent thinker, we need a voice that will vote the will of the constituency.
    Letty is that person.

  8. John Villarreal is not a bad person. He is just not a City Commissioner. The life skills of Letty Perez Garzoria are sure to make her a much better choice. This is not her first Rodeo and after seeing her respond to the Brownsville Republican Club questions at the recent forum, she has articulated a sense of justice in representation for our City and in particular District 4. It is interesting to note that John Villarreal never showed up to the Forum and obviously is lacking the backbone and cojones that Ms. Letty obviously has more of.

  9. Jim, I am the 6:19 post. Your 6:31 post is obviously paraphrasing mine!

Come on dude! By placing your comment before mine, you make it seem like I am parroting you, instead of vice versa! Speak of lack of independent thinking!

You are as bad as Villarreal!

    Sucks!

    Print it!

  10. MMB, please post my comment about letty Grazoria and Robert Uresti being Tea Party. If you disagree, then give me a rebuttal. No need to censor my comment, no one has time for such affairs. like I said, they say they can do it better than those already in office but they never say how? I don't socialize or have lunch with elected officials or people who are running for office.

  11. perez garzoria is a nice lady and she means well, but she is not the right choice in this race. I applaud her efforts to run again after she lost pretty bad in her last foray into politics. If she keeps running, she will enter the argelia miller, robert euresti group of gadflys who want to stay relevant but are not electable.

  12. Your fucking blog is lame! No wonder you have less and less relevance as each day goes by!

I've been told you have a tendency to use other people's words and pass them off as your own.

    Confirmed!

Final sign off from this rag!

  14. Jim, where's the other comment I posted about Uresti and Letty being Tea Party? I'm the atheist that posted about the default position on the belief of God. I find it disingenuous to censor my other comment.

    Please, don't post this comment.

  15. Letty and Robert are Tea Party candidates(same thing goes for all candidates running for city hall), disguised as Democrats. Are they for "Obama care" AKA Affordable Health Care for America Act, Gay Marriage, or immigration reform (amnesty)? They talk about the corruption in the city but they don't give a plan on how they're going to fix this, they don't pinpoint the corruption in town(what's wrong with stepping on peoples steel toe boots). Their arguments are nothing more than ad hominems, they attack those in office but they don't attack the God damn corrupt system in Brownsville. I'd like to see that.

Reminds me of FDR warning to America

“Of course we believe these things.

We believe in Social Security(Affordable insurance for all).

We believe in work for the unemployed(Immigration reform).

We believe in saving homes(Gay Marriage/Equal rights, 14th amendment).

Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things.

But we do not like the way the present administration is doing them.

Just turn them over to us.

We will do all of them.

We will do more of them.

    We will do them better.

And most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.”

. . .Jim feel free to post this!
