Robert Uresti Throws His Hat in the Ring for Commissioner At-Large Against Rose Gowen

Robert Uresti
Retired BISD schoolteacher and Viet Nam veteran Robert Uresti has declared for City Commissioner, District 4.  Uresti narrowly lost a race for TSC trustee last spring.

Uresti joins Letty Perez-Garzoria in challenging incumbent John Villarreal.  Like Ms. Perez-Garzoria, Uresti is a frequent public commenter at city commission meetings and a community advocate.

CORRECTION:  Robert Uresti's Facebook page did indicate that he was running against John Villarreal for District 4, but I just got an inbox from his son, Robert, Jr. who told me he had decided to run against Rose Gowen as an At-Large candidate. . .

  1. I've seen some of his blog comments and have visited his facebook page. And so he's claiming to be a retired BISD schoolteacher? LOL!

  3. Rose Gowen has done nothing as a commissioner. She is simply a Tony Martinez puppet. I would vote for Uresti in a heartbeat.

    1. Dump Rose Gowen , Please!!!! Even if Robert Uresti accomplishes nothing, he is still 100 times better than a TM puppet.

  5. I have heard Robert speak about his community and we should admire him for speaking up. Too many people don't step up to express their feelings about the issues, and too many public officials try to eliminate the voice of the people so that they can dictate their agenda. Good for Robert. One Zavaletta/Zavaleta is one too many on any board/commission/faculty or in this town.

  6. Someone willing to stand up and talk in front of people should not be confused with someone who has something to say. This guy deserves props for his willingness to advocate for his cause but it takes more then that to be a good representative of the people. A good representative must be able to make a cogent argument supporting his postion. A leader must be able to bring together diverse interests for the common good. I don't see it in Mr. Uresti.

  8. What is a "cogent argument"???? I haven't heard many "cogent" points made by any of the commissioners. Can we assume (remember, to assume makes an "ass" our of "U" and "Me".) that "cogent" for this commission means going along with the mayor. There are many "cogent arguments" that are never made...Mr. Uresti isn't afraid to voice his opinion.....and not afraid of making "cogent arguments" for the citizens of this city. Why is the mayor and the commission giving away city property, but not covering bus stops....or not providing bus stops that conform to handicapped standards???? The mayor and the commissioners don't ride the bus, don't have to stand on a curb in the sun waiting for public transport....the commissioners can only see their world.......not the citizen's world in Browntown. The closest they get to the people is from their cars in a parade....and where were Rose Gowen, John Villareal....and where was Juliet Garcia...Queen of the Realm.

    1. You are right. If others don't make sense he shouldn't have to either. I forgot for a minute that I seem to be in a place where we strive for the lowest common denominator. Sometimes I accidently expect more. Sorry, I'll try to keep it in check.

  9. Good for you Mr. Uresti, but make sure Roman Perez does not manipulate you to be an an Hernandez boy, just like him. Roman claims to be a Republican, but supported an Hernandez against Raul Lopez. Good Luck Mr. Uresti, and be your own man.

  13. He's inconsequential but yeah, let him have a run at it. Jim what city commissioner or mayor did a great job as a politician here in Browntown? What rising prospects (persons running for office)do you see? Do you think he knows what the Harlem Shuffle is?

  15. This man was my 5th grade teacher at El Jardin. It was not a particularly good experience for me. I can't not attest to his skill as a politician, but I recall he was a particularly biased and unfair teacher who always had his teachers pets.
