Brownsville Economic Development Council Contributed $192,250 to Rick Perry Slush Fund

Jason Hilts, BEDC CEO
From the editor:  A reference to this first appeared in the Brownsville Voice.  The original article quoted from below is from the Houston Chronicle.

Sleazy Jason Hilts and the Brownsville taxpayer entity he heads are the second biggest contributor to what is referred to as a Rick Perry slush fund called Texas One.  The fund, to which Brownsville's scumbags in the BEDC have contributed nearly $200,000 of Brownsville taxpayer dollars, sends Rick Perry and his cronies on extremely expensive trips like to the U.S. Open, Formula One auto races and a trip to the World Expo in Shanghai, China.  The trip to Shanghai alone cost $500,000.  The Perrys go first class on Brownsville money.

Here is the report from the Houston Chronicle:
"Austin attorney Buck Wood, an expert in state ethics laws, noted that Perry cannot accept campaign contributions from corporations under state law. Setting up a nonprofit to accept the corporate money permits Perry to skirt that law, he said.
"It's just a slush fund for whatever he wants to use it for," Woods said. "He takes credit for every job that appears in Texas."
Since 2009, 15 Texas- One trips carried price tags of $50,000 to $500,000, including three trips to the U.S. Open tennis championship in New York. Either the governor, his wife or former Secretary of State Hope Andrade, a Perry appointee, went on the priciest excursions.
A trip to the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai cost a whopping $500,480, which covered travel expenses for the Texas entourage led by Perry and his wife, Anita, and a $325,000 contribution to support the USA pavilion."

AT&T had the second-highest total payments to TexasOne, at $203,162 over three years, followed by the Brownsville Economic Development Council, which spent $192,250.
A spokeswoman for the Brownsville organization said it is funded through an economic development corporation that levies a local sales tax.

  1. The answer is obvious : repeal taxes one by one until you have a government small enough to drown in an average bathtub.

  2. Hilts should have been fired long ago. He was caught using the city card to buy personal things. How he escaped that I will never know. He is worthless. Check his travel. It rivals that of Secretary Of State Clinton's!

  4. Seems that too many people in Cameron County use bribery to overcome incompetence. Officials of the city and county lack the leadership ability to move the county and city forward,so they conform to the corruption so pervasive here. Lawyers use bribery to hide incompetence or to cheat the system. We see bribery and corruption everywhere. This Rick Perry fund sounds like the President's Fund that Juliet Garcia had, to give her money to do what she wished, with no accountability or oversight. This "gift" to Rick Perry was without public oversight and seemingly without the oversight of the city commission. We have too many governments in Cameron County (County Commission, City Commissions, Port Board, School District Boards, Water Districts, and, like Texas too many elected officials who are free to work outside any common policies) with too many elected officials. Public apathy comes with so many elections and so many assholes running for office. When there is a lack of leadership (as there is in Cameron County) the situation is worse. Thus, the Jason Hilts and others take advantage of the lack of oversight and leadership, but acting on their own....usually acting in a way to serve themselves.

    1. Tony Martinez is very much on board with the concept of squandering Brownsville's hard-earned tax dollars on lavish travel to exotic locales for no good reason. Jason Hilts accompanied Tony, Rose and company on the Bolivia "senior trip", wining and dining at taxpayer expense on a whim. This did NOTHING for our city except drain funds that could have skillfully been utilized in so many necessary areas.

Martinez, Hilts and their ilk simply have no conscience.

  5. Jason Hilts is a joke and a thief. The only development and jobs he has brought Brownsville will cost the local taxpayers millions once the Tenaska executives dig their talons into us. I hope you choke on your expense acct. paid for steak you fat fuck.

  6. Un-Fucking Believable
I am firmly convinced that there is not one honest politician of any kind; that goes from School Principals to Presidents of the United States.
All of them, and I mean every fucking one of them tell you one lie after another and then will stab you in the back for next to nothing.
We don’t have elections anymore, we just trade one set of crooks for another set of crooks, it’s just PATHETIC.
    I quit.

  7. Is it just me or is Brownsville/Cameron County as corrupt as Chicago? Do I REALLY want to move here? Not real sure about that.
