The Rose and Tony Show~Workshop for UTB Pitch January 15 @ 4:30 PM

Tony Martinez
Perhaps it is time for one man show Tony Martinez to finally give the taxpayers of Brownsville a glimpse at his master plan for downtown with a "presentation and discussion of the proposal submitted by the City of Brownsville for an Urban College Campus of the University of Texas at Brownsville."  The agenda for the workshop schedule January 15th at 4:30 PM at Brownsville City Hall also promises a tantalizing look at the "economic impact thereof."

Without any imput from the community or consensus building within the City Commission, Martinez has been buying speculative real estate like crazy in downtown Brownsville using taxpayer dollars.  Purchased properties include the Old National Guard Building near TSC, a nursing home, two side-by-side small locations with one housing a restaurant, the Casa del Nylon for 2.3 million and several others.

Rose Gowen
The workshop agenda lists Mayor Tony Martinez and Commissioner Rose Gowen as moderators for the forum.  The agenda printout ends with this disclaimer:

NOTE:  The City Commission of the City of Brownsville reserves the right to discuss any items in Executive Session whenever authorized under the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551, Title 5 of the Texas Government Code.

  1. Just another example of the autocratic policy making system which Tony Martinez fosters. No team work, no commission debate, just "wham, bam, let's spend more tax dollars". Why wasn't anything discussed before the purchase of these properties. We know UT System will take anything they can get free....but this ain't free, it's costing the tax payer lots of money that this city can't afford. An "Urban University"...what crap. Juliet is grasping for straws and has Tony fooled.

  6. What is the purpose of more higher education if there are no jobs for the graduates to stay here and become tax paying citizens.

  10. How can Tony Martinez and Rose Gowen expect to develop a proposal for an "urban campus" when UT System and the Texas Legislature haven't decided what UT will look like in the future. We can expect that Queen Juliet is squarely behind this meeting as are members of United Brownsville (A.K.A. Juliet Garcia's Pawns). Just as Juliet expected TSC to turn over all assets to UT and forgive a substantial debt; Juliet, through Tony Martinez and Rose Gowen wants the city to turn over assets and spend millions (or more)to "give" Juliet influence with UT System. This is about Juliet....not what benefits the city. UTB-TSC in Partnership didn't attract business downtown, and a new "urban" UTB will not be a draw. Not going to happen. Why can't Tony and Rose see that "downtown" Brownsville isn't an attraction to Brownsville citizens and visitors...except those from Mexico. Just look at the city, it has moved North, East, West......but has the downtown has become a "mercado" for Mexico. At the meeting today, supposedly a plan will be presented.....Who's plan? And, what will be the cost to the tax payers? Me thinks this will be an effort to drive "the plan" down the throats of the citizens...

  11. [Me thinks this will be an effort to drive "the plan" down the throats of the citizens...]

It's "Methinks," not "Me thinks." Nice comment, but you stumbled there at the end, like an obrero loading carrots onto a truck. Sorry. I know that'll hurt, ya crazy guy!
