Slowly, But Surely Cameron County's Corrupt Judicial System Being Uncovered

After a lengthy conversation with Brian Janis about a year ago, he pointed out the second story window of his office toward the Cameron County Courthouse:  "It's totally corrupt over there."

For the last two weeks' in the Federal Court House two blocks away, 12 jurors listened to testimony, peered at visual aids showing signatures, courtroom documents with boxes checkmarked, listened to recorded conversations and testimony in the Ray Marchan trial.  As you know Marchan was convicted on 7 felony counts, including a racketeering charge.

The unraveling of Brownsville's deeply rooted judicial corruption does not stop here.  More indictments are on the way.  Beyond that, County Commissioner David Garza wants the county to purchase the Marchan trial transcripts.

“If there is anything in the transcripts that reflects any kind of violations, I think the Commissioners Court has a duty to the people it represents that we uphold people to those standards,” Garza said on Monday.

“People are sick and tired of not being able to trust in the judiciary in this county. Everyone I run into…that is the first comment I hear,” he said.

During the Limas testimony he named 138th District Judge Arturo C. Nelson, 444th District Judge David Sanchez, 357th District Judge Leonel Alejandro and 404th District Judge Elia Cornejo-Lopez as unethical.

Judge Hanen also said that he has written a letter to the State Bar of Texas regarding the unethical behaviour mentioned during the trial.  That may lead to an investigation of some of the lawyers Limas mentioned, whether he personally regarded the monies he received as gifts, loans or bribes.

Of course, when sanctions were denied, venues changed, bonds and sentences reduced by bribery, it simply highlights all of the injustice done to those who could NOT afford the high-priced lawyers linked to the scheme.  They may have gotten their day in court, but they likely didn't get justice.  All the decisions tainted by these self-serving judges and attorneys are suspect.

  3. One of the things that bugs me the most about this nonsense is that now that this mess is going public all these lawyers and court insiders are saying that they knew there was all this corruption in the courthouse. What did they do about it? Every politician, lawyer and court insider that knew what was going on or even if they only had strong suspicions about corruption, and did nothing must accept a bit of culpability in all this.
And that brings me to the thing with Cadriel and the county personnel department. In the grand scheme of things it probably doesn't count for much but when Cadriel took that job after someone else took the test for him he stole the job from every other person who hoped to be considered. And whoever facilitated the test taking is culpable as a co-conspirator. Frankly, I wish they could be charged with theft and with as many counts as there were applicants for the job. I also wish that there was a lawyer with balls enough to find one of those applicants (I'll waive barratry) and sue the county as a whole and the individuals involved separately. If law enforcement won't investigate or act I'll bet that when everybody gets sued the individuals involved will start trading up to be released from civil liability.
This test taking thing is perhaps one of the lesser infractions in this city and county but if they will cheat on the little things, they will cheat on the big ones.

  7. An innocent man was sent to prison on Nov. 13, 2012 by Judge Elia Cornejo Lopez. She refused to look at the evidence that would have proven this man innocent. This man originally pleaded guilty in Judge Arturo Nelson's court after been threatened by the DA's office that his wife would be imprisoned if he didn't. Anyway, the case was somehow taken over by Judge Elia Cornejo and gave the impression that she was looking for justice in this case. Somehow, she ignored all the pleadings by the man's lawyer and revoked the man's parole and imprisoned him for ten years. I know this man is completely innocent but the corrupted DA's office in Cameron County could care less about justice. They (DA's office kept 1.8 million dollars) when that money should have been used as restitution and given to the plaintiffs. No one is above the law does not pertain to the Cameron County legal system. May God forgive them. I can hardly wait for judgement day.

  8. A year later and still corruption surfaces on almost any issue regarding anything involving county judges from special treatment and perks @ Isla Blanca park to more profitable thievery. What the county needs is an agressive grand jury investigation to eradicate the vermin aka county judges. But evidently these small time crooks have Austin in their pockets as well.
