Chess and Debate Champions, Not Football Give Brownsville Reason to Cheer!

     Jedavi Avila doesn't score touchdowns, but she moves knights, bishops, rooks and pawns well enough to be the best middle school girl chess player in the United States in 2011.  After winning the Texas Girls Chess Championship in Corpus Christi October 15th, Jedavi went to the international tournament in Las Vegas, winning that as well for middle school players.  She was recognized with a proclamation at the City Commission meeting November 1.

     Also recognized with a proclamation was the Tip-of-Texas Region debate team with 33 of 37 members from St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville.   This group of Brownsville high school students won the Texas Great Debate in Sherman, TX June 9-12, 2011.
