On a cold, drizzly night, the Brownsville Event Center was filled to capacity with citizens, public officials, school administrators and friends from Mexico for the annual "Taste of La Frontera," where local eateries and clubs offer free samples of their cuisine and beverages.

On the same day, 1,761 miles to the northeast in Washington, D.C., Donald Trump, our county's 47th president, was inaugurated, generating a certain uneasiness throughout the world, to see if or how Trump follows through on his saber-rattling threats to the national sovereignties of Mexico, Panama, Canada and fellow NATO member, Denmark, the country with control of Greenland.
