Hass Avocado

The avocado with dark green, bumpy skin, the Hass, is the variety most commonly sold in local stores. It was first grown and sold in Southern California in 1926 by Rudolph Hass, a mail carrier and amateur horticulturalist.

Local Grower of the Fuerte Avocado

Now, the avocado that seems to do very well in Brownsville yards and fields, climate zone 9B, is the Fuerte, sometimes called the Florida avocado, a larger fruit, lighter green, with a thinner skin, first brought to the U.S. from Mexico in 1911.

The Fuerte has a rich, buttery, creamier flavor, with a hint of hazelnut, and is the avocado my wife Ana prefers, using the fruit to make a delicious smoothie.
