  1. Whenever I see or buy tamales, I think of my late mother-in-law Flora Perez, who made the best tamales of pork and turkey. The spicyness was offset with the sweetness of raisins. The Perez family lived on the very end of King Street, an area that became part of the Gladys Porter Zoo.
